Parker 51 Comeback 2020?

When I started out, I bought a few cheap Chinese pens, because they were five bucks. The Wing Sung 237 is actually a pretty nice pen for that price (the Guanleming demonstrator, OTOH, had the finial break off the cap when I caught the clip on the elastic band in a pen case).  The "fake" Hero 616 is probably worth a dollar -- and it writes like a pen that's worth a dollar.  Ironically, I lucked out at an estate sale a couple of years ago fall, and bought a REAL 51 (in what I gather is one of the rarer colors -- Forest Green) and paid two bucks.  Okay, and another twenty for nib work (it's an EF nib and was a little scratchy at first).  But when all is said and done, it's a Parker 51 -- not a fake of a knockoff.  It's probably from the mid to late 1950s.  And once I got the tines opened up a little, it's a very nice writer; I expect that that fake Hero is going to need a LOT more than twenty bucks worth of nib work to make it be more than a one dollar pen that writes like one....

I tend to agree with you on the Hero 616, Ruth, but the decision is still out on the Baoer 388. It was a gift, so it won't be discarded and I need to compare it with the real sterling silver Sonnet with the stub nib that I bought to celebrate our twenty fifth anniversary.  So far it feels good in the hand but is hard to remove the cap, harder than the real Sonnet.

I wonder if Parker considers FPN as the market force to drive product development.

I wonder if Parker has any particular awareness of FPN.

We can all suspend judgment because the pen has not been launched yet. The secret sauce of 21st century genuine Parker quality has yet to be revealed with this classic.

The sauce used for the 2002 Special Edition 51 wasn't particularly tasty.

Add lightness and simplicate.

I think they likely have been reading FPN, but the question is what influence it may have if any...

It was already 61 years old by then anyway!

Hmm. No.  I'm going out on a limb here.

The shoe's on the wrong foot. Parker should have made the WS 601 Vac filler as the "New" 51, and Jinhao the cheesy knock-off that Parker gives us for 6X the price.

Why would I pay £199 for a gold nibbed "New" version when I can get the much more sophisticated, elegant, and technologically superior original for a third of the price?

It's a cheap marketing ploy to exploit the reputation and mystique of the original whilst offering an inferior product at inflated prices

I'll don my hard hat and retreat to the bomb shelter in the back garden.

When you get out so far, you'll have me for company. After getting my first Parker 51, I looked back to the WS 601 that I had gotten months earlier. I could see the DNA.

That said, the new one is much easier to make, like the sac mechanism of the aerometric I suspect. While I am a  big sac fan, I am less so for cartridges even though, for some reason, I like converters.

While not mentioning this site by name, a few years ago when I was having issues with the Parker Urban from Hell and dealing with some chick in France over the extended warranty (and their wretched customer service) I did sort of happen to mention that she -- and Parker in general -- should be more concerned with the mouthy American broad with access to "an internationally read pen forum" than their entire potential Chinese market....   So I'm betting that they're aware of us, even if they don't necessarily pay close attention to what's said in the Parker Forum.

I'll give you three guesses as to who that "mouthy American broad" is.... B)

Given that the Chinese makers are listening to us, it really doesn't matter when or if ever Parker decides to pay attention.

I personaly wish Chevorlet would come out with a replica 1949 Suburban with modern accroutimates. I know this isn't going to occur, so If I really want one, it will require a boutique maker.

If you want a new replica Parker 51, get the WS 601 for $20.

While waiting for a pre-ordered "new" P51, I've purchased Parker 100 in unused/mint condition...

And i should say that I really like it - it is an excellent pen, and I'm really happy with such a nice addition to my Parker collection :)

🤓Joost from Appelboom gets the drop on the new Parker 51

Highlights

  • Dang, cannot deny it, it's purdy 😍and looks better moving in videos
  • fun fact: LBJ (USA) was a P51 fan and orders a bunch, Joost offers Biden to reach out for bulk order 😆
  • precious resin - he said it; i don't think you can go wrong with French Rubbermaid Tech 🤣
  • screw vs post better for retention and ink dryout deterrence
  • clip same as Sonnet - longer for better anchor
  • dimensions are different than original, i was checking against my navy aero and this new one is longer but proportions are better not sure if that distorts the original P51 magic ratios of cap, section, barrel, etc
  • did i say it's really pretty? and i have the WS 601, original P51 and new Jinhao 85 which are all perfection as well
  • I hope it is a good seller for them, though from more research and @TheRedBeard recent P100 acquisition, i wonder if they should have just re-released P100

Great post, Peroride, thank you :)

They should certainly try to re-release P100 as well: while I love genuine original P51, it is a bit too light for me (a very personal attitude), so I decided to try P100 and it seems I like it.

For the same reason I have no warm feelings towards Duofolds (though I have got a few nice ones and use them from time to time ;) ) - big and nice pen but too light...

I got the plum one with the medium nib💖

I genuinely hope this personally brings YOU positivity, and that this pen is a source of joy for myself and others through time and space ❤️

One thing is for sure: I am not buying another pen THIS YEAR!

Mostly because it doesn't feel so good spending "such a fat wad of cash home slice."

I do feel some regret spending so much money on this pen(it's true 🤷🏻‍♂️ can't help it). Most of my pens are sub $20 dollar treasures from ebay, and this is by far the most I have ever spent on a pen ! Maybe next year I'll get another pen, but I think I'm set for life on pens now = )

For real❤️

This plum one better feel, write and look like a true treasure or I am going be real put off by Parker hahahahhaha = )

For now, I patiently await this plum 2020 Parker 51 and I genuinely hope that each and every one of you gets to experience what it's like to write with one of these (if you feel like it; that is ❤️🙃❤️)

I'll be sure to upload some content so you can see it once I get it in my hands

hope you have a great rest of the day!

thanks for checking this out = )

@FerocityThe plum with gold trim and gold nib would be my choice as well. Beautiful pen. It's a real Parker and their effort to bring out an iconic model. Congratulations! Enjoy it in good health and good times!
