Sheaffer School Pens, with refilled cartridges!

  • Blue (M) - Lamy Blue-Black
  • Clear (F) - J Herbin Perle Noire

Gorgeous little writers. The Perle Noire makes the fine nib a little bit wider. And the dry Lamy makes the medium nib a little narrower -- now they both write about the same size line on Clairefontaine paper.

A few months ago, I remembered that a person who used to live in my house had probably left two Shaeffer school pens inked in a drawer.  By the time that thought crossed my mind, the two pens had certainly not been used for three years or more.  It turned out that only one of the two was inked, its cartridge virtually full.  I put the pen to paper, and it wrote as readily as if someone had used it earlier the same day.

I can't say I love the nibs, but the school pens are certainly serviceable and spring quickly back into action in circumstances in which many expensive pens--many much more expensive pens--would require significant attention.

Some of my favourite, 'cheap' pens are 'school pens'.  Pelikanos have always been a favourite, and I remember with some fondness used a Shaeffer some 55 years ago, and Platignums not much later.

Shaeffer pens were all that my dad would buy and use.

I have three inked at present, a Conway Stewart Coronet in the Poinsettia material, inked with some Monteverde Green for the holidays; a new Santini Libra Cumberland inked some MB Toffee; and a Lamy Safari inked with some of Birmingham Pens new Everlasting nano-pigment ink called Black Ice that I’ve been trying out.  So far it’s been an unexpected surprise as a dark teal-grey ink that is a well-behaved joy to write with.

Ridiculously big Ranga Ganesha with Pilot Studio 373 (it was going to be Herbin Cacao du Bresil, but the pen's too big to fit in the bottle and I couldn't be bothered to faff around)

My trusty MB149 with old formula MB emerald green

Today's seasonal sparkle was Diamine Tropical Glow in a TSWBI GO with a 1.1 stub

Indeed, the Sheaffer School Pens are fun.

I have now put my two away in the closet, fully inked, as a test. I'll get them out in a month or three and see how they're doing. My guess is they will start right up.

Two PenBBS 355s  – my favourite PenBBS model.

One is the original 355 and is in Amber is a Cat acrylic, with the associated "paws" nib. It's inked with PenBBS No. 283 Petra, a dark red.

The other is the "improved" 355 in Galaxy. That one has an F nib and is inked with Diamine Pelham Blue.

Both pens are beautiful, the nibs are great, I like these inks, and it all makes my handwriting look as good as it gets. They're far from the only pens I've been using in recent months, but they're always in the mix.

Today, also a Sailor Pro Gear Slim in Supernova Red – a finish I don't actually like that much. But it has an EF nib and is inked with Sailor Irori. Great for mark-up.

Lined paper makes a prison of the page.

I wrote a few pages of illegible notes with my Namiki Urushi #20 in M during a meeting. On Rhodia A4 graph paper. Translating that data to information will follow tomorrow. On Tomoe River paper.

Pilot Decimo (light grey, F nib) -- finishing a fill of Iroshizuku Tsutsuji (which reminds me, I need to check on the flushing/soaking process...).

Parker Vector (black, IF nib) -- diluted Colorverse Stars and Stripes.

Parker Vector (purple, M nib) -- KWZI IG Violet #2.

Lamy Safari (violet, B nib) -- Birmingham Pens Waterfront Dusk.

OOOH, Oxford Blue!  I need to dig my bottle of that out -- I haven't used it for a while.

A selection of kaweco sport frosteds, mostly b and bb with inks to tone with the pens - experimenting with converters for them and still not found the 'one'.
