What Pens Are You Using Today 2020

Have you tried the Pilot Explorer?

-----------------------

No, I hadn't even heard of it.

You might like it.

It's basically a hybrid of the Metro, Kakuno, and Prera.

I have one coming in from Goulet Pens I'm going to do a review on.

I personally love Pilot Steel nibs, but Pilot doesn't offer any full sized options that are comfortable for my hand besides the Kakuno, but I need a clip. The step down on the Metro is just too much for me, I'm sick of posting the Prera, so the Explorer works out nicely.

It's lightweight. It's basically the same weight as a Kakuno. So if you put a ConB squeeze converter or con70 in it, it ups the weight to about the Lamy Safari.

I tried a friend's. I loved it. Everything about it worked great.

Then tried to get one for myself, but ran into a strange problem: My Pilot converters didn't fit snugly. They would fall out easily. I've never had that problem with Pilot Pens and I've used a lot of them at all the price ranges.

So I took things more seriously, got one from Goulet Pens, asked them to check it, and it's supposed to arrive tomorrow.

Ah. I don't think I would be likely to buy another Pilot steel nib, although they are very serviceable. I already have a Metropolitan and a Prera and often think of giving one or the other away, but one is a medium and the other a fine, so I haven't (yet) done so.

Just received a Lamy 2000 with an OB nib, from Endless Pens. Great buying experience. Inked it up with Diamine Sapphire Blue, which I really like. Just emailed Lamy to enquire about exchanging the nib for an OM. The OB is a bit too "B" for me. Hope there is a simple way to do this without sending it back to Germany.

Wish me success.

Today will be my Parker 51 plum Demi, inked with Rohrer & Klingner Aubergine.

I have three pens inked but am trying, as an experiment, to rotate among my inked pens day by day, as opposed to writing with each inked pen every day.

So far it's been a Parker day:

Parker 61, grey, F nib -- J Herbin Lavender (scented), slightly diluted to get the flow going.

Parker Vacumatic, 3rd Generation, Silver Pearl Major, F nib -- vintage Quink Microfilm Black.

Probably going to pull out the Pelikan M600 Violet and White, EF nib, in a little while -- I just got it inked up yesterday with Akkerman Laan van Nieuw Oost-Indigo. Not sure I entirely like the color in that fine a nib, but it is behaving quite well.

Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

ETA: Besides those pens, I also ended up using the Burgundy Snorkel Admiral, M nib, with vintage Skrip Permanent Royal Blue.

Inked up three today, all Parkers and all with modern Quink:

  • Vac 51 - Blue Black
  • 21 - Black
  • 51 Special - Washable Blue

The 51 Special has had some flow issues since I got it a few months back. But before sending it off for service, I have decided to give it a chance with nice basic Quink Washable Blue, which works in everything. (I could also have used Serenity Blue, of course, but I am in a Parker mood today.) I have written almost a page with it so far, and it seems to be good. Fingers crossed!
