What Is Your Favorite Ink?

Hah! I swap out inks all the time -- not just when I empty a bottle. I bought FIVE when I was in the Boston area a week and a half ago.... And a new pen. Only the new pen ended up getting filled with something I've had for several years but had never gotten around to opening....

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

I have half a dozen inks I like enough to want to replace them with the same ink once I finish a bottle. Other inks I would be more likely to replace with a similar ink, or not at all.

I currently have 17 inks and would prefer to have no more than 10.

I'm loving Diamine Ancient copper and sapphire blue despite not loving blue ink in general. They're mily first diamine inks and I'm wondering why i left it so long to try them!

I discovered Ancient Copper within the past year, and I can understand why it is popular. Certainly it is among my favorites.

What would your top 10 be?

I have 12 but will eventually use them up until I have 5 or 6. Probably Iroshizuku Yama budo, kon peki, Tsutsuji, Diamine bilberry, and Waterman purple.

Here they are. I don't really love Kujaku, but so far it is the only ink I have found that works well in my Pelikan 140 extra fine.

  1. Sailor Kobe Suma Purple
  2. TAG Kyoto Kyo-Iro Soft Snow of Ohara
  3. Rohrer & Klingner Aubergine
  4. J Herbin Amethyste de l’Oural
  5. Sailor Shigure
  6. Pilot Iroshizuku Murasaki Shikibu
  7. Waterman Purple
  8. Sailor Kobe Taisanji Yellow
  9. J Herbin Poussiere de Lune
  10. Pilot Iroshizuku Kujaku

If it weren't for the Pelikan 140, all my inks would be purple. The person who sold me that pen advised against using purple ink in it.

Sailor Rikyu-cha is my all time favorite.

Sailor Nano Souboku, Akkerman Steenrood, Kobe Ginza Gold-Sepia, and Itoshizuku Fuyu-syogun round out my top 5.

My top 3 remain the same, but I have to give a shout-out to Iroshizuku Tsukushi, which is just brilliant! I thought originally that I would have zero interest, but I keep reaching for it these days.

This topic inspired me to fill up a silly number of fountain pens this week, with different inks (it also inspired me to buy some new ones, and some old ones I'd run out of/given away). Not including my undisputed all time favourite (Pilot BB), the nicest blue colour I currently possess is probably Visconti Blue. Very smooth and wet too. The only downside of it is that it bleeds through paper a tad more than I'd like. Not a major issue by any means, though. Horizon Blue by Montevede is similar, but not quite so vibrant or wet, and it doesn't bleed at all. Two outstanding inks, for my money. Stick the Visconti in an average to slightly drier pen, and the Monteverde in an average to slightly wetter pen, and they're a delight.

That's really curious. Is there a reason that you don't use something you like more in the daily writers?

Sorry to take so long to get back to you on this.

I quite like 1864, it's become my 2nd favorite BB, I'd say. The PaperMate I have it in is a dry writer so the 1864 works fine with it. My favorite BB is Stipula Dark Blue but thatt's way too dry for the PaperMate, so I have it in my blue-striped M400, which I carry in my bag every day, along with my Stresemann and Telecom, both also with Stipula inks. As I only use it on occasion, it feels like a special treat when I do so.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.
