Lead Holders That Work The The Staedtler Rotary Sharpener?

Recommended Posts

I like my staedtler lead holder, but I REALLY like the rotary pointer, and I am interested in finding an all metal version of the lead holder (2mm) that works with the pointer

Secondary preference would be that the holder has a basic sharpener in the cap as well.

Caran d'Ache Ecridor & Fix Metal 22, Kohinoor 5900 series work with the rotary tub sharpener and all three of mine have the emergency sharpener in the cap.

Not sure what you mean by "rotary pointer". But if you mean something like this:

https://www.dickblick.com/products/staedtler-mars-lead-pointer/

I can absolutely attest that the leads for Staedtler-Mars and Berol Turquoise lead holders will work in them just fine (I have had at least one Berol Turquoise in my possession since I was a sophomore in college, and also have one of the Staedtler Mars lead holders as well).
I did pick up a heavy duty metal desk model that was literally on a sidewalk being given away, but I always forget to use it. The cheapie ones work well (I found one for a buck on clearance a few years ago at either a local art supply store or a local Pat Catan's (Ohio based craft supply -- like a discount version of Michael's until the chain went belly-up a few months ago and got bought out by Michael's).

I've always preferred them to regular mechanical pencils. I had a 12 pack of the Berol 2H leads last me for something like a decade of moderate use, and I also think I could get a sharper point (which, when you're doing ad layout, is a plus).

I know what you mean. The Staedtler rotary pointer is great, but while it works wonderfully with the 780C leadholder it doesn't work with my preferred Fixpencil. I bought a M+R version of the rotary pointer which came with adapters so allow the Fixpencil to work reasonably well. It's not quite as nice an experience as the Staedtler combo, though.

This week Bleistift did a review of a (vintage?) Koh-i-Noor rotary pointer. My M+R looks like a cheap plastic copy of it.

I know I'm now recommending other pointers rather than other pencils, which is the opposite of what you want, but I haven't tried any other 2mm leadholders. That's mainly because the Fixpencil is brilliant (and is all metal and has an emergency pointer too) and I haven't felt the need to try any others.

Thank you!

Has anyone tried to see if a rotring lead holder will work?

Yes, my Rotring 300 2mm lead holder works fine in the rotary sharpener. In fact, with the exception of my Kaweco 2mm propelling pencil (which isn't really a lead holder even though it takes 2mm leads), all my 2mm lead holders work with a rotary sharpener. Personally, I prefer a standard 2mm sharpener (same style as an ordinary pencil sharpener) to a rotary sharpener.

I'm pleased to see that I'm not on my own in preferring the old 2mm format to modern 0.5mm propelling pencils.

I've retried my Fixpencil 22 in the Staedtler rotary tub sharpener and it doesn't fit. My Ecridor (ok, 0.5mm mechanical pencil rather than a 2mm leadholder, but they're going to be similar sizes) has the same issue. How do you get yours to work?

I suppose technically if you don't put the leadholder in very far and extend the lead hugely then it'll sharpen, but then you don't get the stability, nor the useful point sharpness selection holes.

Both of my Caran d'ache lead holders are older Fixpencil Metal 22 early 90's and the Ecridor was the first year. Could be a narrower body? Unknown, have been using the Staedtler tub since the late 70's.

If you extend the lead to about 1cm does it work for you? Found this to be the case with other lead holders.

Neither of my favourites but are good EDC in messenger bags.

The Mitsubishi 2mm pointer will work with any 2mm lead. Similar to emergency cap pointer.

Kum Automatic has the 3.2 and 2 mm lead pointer holes. Single blade

Then of course there is the:
