Pens With Guilloche Pattern

Recommended Posts

I have a few Parker 75 fountain pens with interesting barrel patterns (Ecossais, Flamme, etc.), and I enjoy the tactile sense when holding them. So now Im looking for a modern pen with a guilloche pattern, say, under $500. I like the pattern on the Aurora Mamba, but Im not crazy about the totally black pen (nib and clip as well as barrel and cap). I like the pattern on some of the Graf Von Faber Castell Pens, but theyre a bit too slim for my liking (the Parker 75 is not ideal for me either). Id appreciate any suggestions for other modern fountain pens with a guilloche pattern on the barrel that you like or have found interesting/ attractive, and any pics would be welcome. Thank you in advance.

Grifos makes some silver pens with guilloche patterns. I have one, but the silver is kinda rough imo on the body. They run roughly $250 tho so they are in the price range easily.

edit-after further consideration, it's not really rough at all. there's some texturing for sure, but the detail and finish is smooth overall and the pen has a nice weight.

Grifos pens are also well below $250, Maurizio has the oikos, which uses a cheap generic nib that writes well enough, but is still implanted in one of his staggeringly pretty guilloche patterns. the oikos runs about $90-100 for a silver cap or barrel, and about $125 for a full silver, and $140 for full silver in one of his more difficult guilloches. I have a standard guilloche + brass cap model that was like $90, and a twist guilloche full cap and body model that I paid about $140 for. I have the standard broad in the brass cap model and I swapped in a JoWo EF into my full silver. (the secion on the oikos is black lacquered brass with a snap cap, but he can do them in silver too for more- there are screw cap versions, and the oikos is a snap cap which also snaps to post and posts very deeply)

about $250-350 will get you a full sterling grifos pen with an 18k nib, you can also get cap or barrel in bog oak/other woods and rayskin.

He can also do a hilariously huge variety of guilloche, and I've been thoroughly impressed. Some of his patterns are intentionally left quite textured, one of mine is this way, and I looooove the feel in the hand, and my full silver one is much smoother.

Maurizio is an absolute joy to work with.

Reading your description actually made me pull my Grifos out again and I have to say, it's nowhere near as rough as I remember it-I'd daresay it's not rough at all. It also looks a lot better than I remember, so I think I'll be inking it up and giving it a proper run through.

I actually got mine through (mass)drop so didn't work with Maurizio directly, but it's good to know that he does good work and is fine to work with. I went to the website and there are a large variety of designs there, quite reasonably priced (I have the Pen and the City model, with 18k nib so that's what I was basing my price on)

If what you're hankering isn't listed on his website, email him and he'll custom make whatever you want for no extra charges, gives you a picture with his different kinds of guilloche and their prices, the "premium", more fancy looking and elaborate guilloche finishes are like $15-25 more in total, but the vast majority of the patterns are the base price.

His english is great and communication is as well. Can't recommend him enough, his pens are absolute underrated gems in value, nothing else in sterling silver can even touch his prices, and he's also a verified member of the italian silversmith's guild, so his quality has pedigree

Some Levenger True Writer models claim to have guilloche patterns... They run in the $100 (+/- $30) range.

Example (not a recommendation) https://www.levenger.com/writing-8/true-writer-pens-22899/true-writer-two-tone-herringbone-anniversary-fount-16765.aspx

It's definitely not silver at that price, but it's damn pretty.

If I didn't already have a simpler Levenger guilloche model I might have jumped on that one (mine doesn't have the gold trim, just chrome/steel). Of course, having two new pens arrive today, and awaiting two others helps push down that urge -- the ruby m200/ink seems to be a fugitive pen (when I told the vendor I'd accept separate pen/ink -- as the combined case would just go into storage -- the pen with desired nib had sold out).

  • 3 weeks later...

Only have old ones.....out side the 'new' P-75.,...well I bought it new back in '70/71.

Do take a look at vintage BCHR, there are different chasings to be had. They were cheaper than expected, in I had thought I'd never own one of those 'expensive' things.....back when $50-70 was a lot to put out on a pen.....I suddenly got caught in a rain storm of them. 7 or so. I broke my physiological border with this one....a whole $70!!! :yikes: That was before the last Depression, and with the Cartel now pushing up prices on German Ebay......those days are long gone. Those who rip people off with Buy Now Idiot prices, have taken to selling the same pen in regular auction at $10 less so noobies ask for a fortune for a pen not worth it.

Have 7 or so silver, and a 14 K gold one and a couple gold plated ones.

There are some real find used Shaffer Imperials also.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

Ransom Bucket cost me many of my pictures taken by a poor camera that was finally tossed. Luckily, the Chicken Scratch pictures also vanished.

The cheapest lessons are from those who learned expensive lessons. Ignorance is best for learning expensive lessons.

That's right I did forget that the justys 95's plastic comes in a straight ridged version (the one I have) and a barleycorn guilloche.

It's still plastic, but it's got the pattern.
