Very nice. I like the materials and pen shapes. The white one has an interesting cap, and I like your choice of clip on the orange one: that black looks better I think than a silver or gold would. The cutouts in the barrel of the orange pen don't look very uniform though, that takes away a bit from the pen.

I am looking for a better way to do the cut outs to be honest. At the moment they are done by hand and eye with a dremel. The idea is that they start big at the nib end and then reduce in size the further towards the end of the barrel they go. I struggled to get them in line as drilling on a curved smooth surface isn't the best situation. It is definately a design i am revisiting and practising on. I have some things i want to do with it.

I cannot make myself like either the first (a nightmare, please forgive me) or the last one.

In the last one I do not dislike the material, but the shape...with exception to the section.

The second one looks more ordinary, easier to like, but also a more boring shape (tough isn't it?).

And the material is not attractive (to me) those bubbles are too big. The section looks far too skinny (compared to the nib).

Just some very frank opinions. I hope useful to you.

Of course i accept constructive criticism, not everyone has the same tastes so it is always good hearing others opinions.

 

 

What makes the 1st one so nightmarish? Is it the overall design? The viewing holes? That one is more of a prototype than the others.

 

 

The second one is a bit more ordinary for sure. It is more of a base design. On the material side of things though, on closer inspection of the material i think they are a shimmer rather than bubbles. The sections of the pens generally are all the same width at the widest point and are very similar lengths.

 

 

The last one is another one where i am pushing the envelope on what i can do on the lathe. I want to try and make things that look a bit different to the standard shapes you find in pens from multiple different places. Something to set my pens apart. Sure i have the standard shapes and what not as well but i like to experiment with things.

Why did you make the holes? It's a splendid colour and I can't see how holes - even if they were uniform in position and perhaps size - would add anything at all. I confess I'm not partial to the black clip either. I don't think it enhances the pen at all. Again, forgive the honesty......

Honesty is a good thing. Thank you for that This was a prototype really to see how it would turn out. What i plan for it is to have the holes in the same line, that is the first thing i am going to change. And then i want the holes to be biggest at the back of the pen and then reducing in size the further you get to the section. When i teach myself to make alumilite i am going to fill the holes with clear alumilite and it will become an eye dropper pen, so what the holes will eventually add is an ink window which gives an easy indication as to how much ink you have left. Well that is the idea for the future anyways.

If that is what you are trying to accomplish, it might be easier to drill the holes in the blank first. Fill them with alumilite and then turn as normal rather than try to cut and fill them later. I would also imagine it would be easier to line up the holes on a blank versus a semi-finished pen body.

Pleasant aesthetics and fine work. Are those double or triple lead threads? How did you acquire the dies?

Oh no, they are single lead threads. I can't afford the triples. I tend to buy my taps and dies from wherever is cheapest or wherever i can find the specific one i am after so it is a mixture of amazon, Beaufort ink, Turners workshop, and ebay.
