Two Pelikan Fritz Schimpf Italic Grind Nibs & Seven Inks

I thoroughly enjoyed your post and photos. The mystery ink looks very nice.

I have a Moon app that shows both the golden hour and the blue hour. Any chance you might post a photo taken during a golden hour? I think one of those must be during those times I look outside and the color is so unique. It makes you stop and take it in.

Thank you! The Mystery ink has turned out to be a treasure on my writing desk.

L’Artisan Pastellier Callifolio Heure dorée is richly yellow in a Pelikan Italic Broad nib.

I seldom photograph during the Golden Hour. Most of my work is in indirect light during midday.

Here are two animal portraits made during the Golden Hour, both in Sabi Sands, Mpumalanga, South Africa.

Thanks so much, Tom, for this magnificent post. I have had excellent service at all times from Fritz Schimpf, not least when I ordered their Montblanc 146 Platinum Special Italic, which is a superb pen. I'm so glad they were able to get everything to you that you desired.

I am accumulating some equipment that will enable me to photograph my pens more easily, and I look forward to contributing the results here and in other threads on FPN.

I'm so pleased that you, too, have experienced the outstanding service of Fritz Schimpf.

The Montblanc 146 Platinum Special Italic fountain pen was a welcome collaboration with Fritz Schimpf.

That you acquired one of those pens interests me, as I've wondered how they write.

Your pens and inks would be a highlight of FPN. When your photographic gear is good to go, I'll look forward to any image you post.

Tom, it looks like you prepare for the apocalypse where there will be no pens, ink and paper. :)

Thank you for sharing.

~ Zdenek:

My writing desk looks like a small ink shop.

As every day is a writing day, the inks, paper and pens remain in regular use.

Thank you, Tom. This is a lovely piece. And I hadn't known that Fritz Schimpf provides a grinding service; that's extremely good to know.

~ stephanos:

I appreciate your kind comments.

Yes, Fritz Schimpf has a skilled nib specialist.

I've been fully satisfied with the five Italic Grind nibs which have been prepared for me.

It's likely that I may order a few more!

When you reviewed the above ink and pen...are you dipping the nib or are you filling the pen?

Would you classify this as a Blue/Black?

It seems to have a vintage feel which I like.

Your slowly moving me from my EEFs and EFs to BB.

~ David:

Last year it was apparent that writing with a dipped nib had different results than writing with a pen at last somewhat filled with ink.

Accordingly, I switched to a mini-fill, meaning that that just a smidgen of ink is drawn up into the barrel.

The results are more true-to-life when photographed for posting in FPN.

I'm reluctant to assign a color name to any ink, as color tones and hues and perceptions vary.

I wouldn't typically feel that L’Artisan Pastellier Callifolio Equinoxe (5) was Blue/Black, but it would be reasonable if others did.

It seems like a richly dark blue to me, similar to the hue of certain varieties of mussel shells or certain types of oil.

Yes, it does have a vintage feel about it, reminding one of inks used in the 1960s.

Like you, I enjoy writing with EEFs and EFs. If such broader nibs as BB arrive on your writing desk, it'll be an altogether different experience.

Absolutely stunning photography, particularly the wild dog. I love the play of light on his dappled coat.

But, I just don't see a pen, paper or an ink bottle anywhere! :D

~ Looking back at 2019, if I were to select one single fountain pen, paper or ink highlight, it would be the Pelikan M800 Stone Garden IB Nib with a Fritz Schimpf Italic Grind.

Writing with it over the past two and a half months has been nothing less than writing pleasure of the highest quality.

The feedback, crispness, smoothness, ink flow — everything is optimal. There's nothing that I'd change.

***********************************************************

2019 brought ten additional Pelikans to my writing desk, joining the two vintage Pelikans already there.

Best of all, it introduced me to the friendly regular posters of the FPN Pelikan Forum.

May 2020 be a great year for all who regularly write with Pelikan fountain pens and Pelikan inks!

Tom: Thanks again for the info. I now also own a pen with a Fritz Schimpf grind, which is indeed a pleasure to use. Definitely worth the additional cost.

Actually, it was your post that made me get off the fence in the first place on getting a new pen.

Beautiful shots! Thanks for sharing those. :)

They have all been especially pleasing writers.

From the time they arrived until now I've loved writing with them.

Months later, I continue to strongly recommend them.

Great News!

Thank you for telling us.

I've enjoyed writing with every L’Artisan Pastellier Callifolio ink available on my writing desk.

Superb colors, excellent performance in nibs, easy to clean after use.

I hope that you'll enjoy them as much as I have.

Wild Dog Beside a Waterhole

Wow, is that a Painted Wolf? What a amazing experience to see one in the wild!

I love the pen and ink shots, too. I’m really impressed by the engraving identifying the nib grind. I wish all my custom grinds had that. It’s so easy to forget who ground what to which exact shape.

I’ve coveted those circle of inks in their adorable little wedge bottles since I first saw them. Not that I need more inks, but I enjoy the novel presentation.

The animal in the image is Lycaon pictus. It's often also called the African wild dog.

I've been fortunate to observe and photograph Wild Dog packs in both Kenya and South Africa.

The nib engraving on the side is a special touch.

I suspect that there will be more development of that in the near future.

The L’Artisan Pastellier Callifolio wedge-shaped ink bottles are a delight.

I plan to add more of them in 2020.

Nice to know the scientific name. They're such beautiful animals. I guess this is where I picked up Painted Wolves:

https://www.bbcearth.com/blog/?article=whats-in-a-name-why-we-call-them-painted-wolves

Not being as well travelled (or fortunate to spot these) as you, I'm making due watching the local coyotes. It's mating season, so they're not as shy as usual. Plus, it's winter which means their coats are full and fluffy at the moment. And deer instead of impalas. The bucks also have their full antlers at the moment and are walking around like they own the place. So beautiful. (My photography is of the iPhone variety, so you win that round by a very large margin. )

Looks like I have a whole new brand of inks to collect. :D

Afternoon Stone Garden IB

~ More than one year later, the Pelikan Souverän Special Edition M800 Stone Garden with an IB nib and a Fritz Schimpf Italic Grind remains a cherished daily writer.

Its reliability is such that it serves as the go-to pen for many daily writing tasks, especially short notes.

On a blustery early March afternoon it was photographed on the ledge of a south-facing windowsill.

A favorite...
