My Curse With The Montblanc 149 :,v Pure Problem

Hello everyone here at FPN. :)

In the past I shared with you a thread in which I expressed my desire to obtain Montblanc 149 since for me it had always been a pretty beautiful fountain pen that from my children I longed to obtain.
The price of a new MB 149 is high, so I decided to get a used one to "save a lot of money" and to my misfortune it was the opposite.
I noticed one that I found here at the fountain pen network in the USD 420 classifieds and I contacted the seller and asked him if he had the pen available and he told me that it was not and he showed me another one in the private messages and he told me that It was a condition near mint, fine point and it worked amazing, so I decided to buy it and with it the beginning of the curse and misfortune.
The pen came to my house and I was completely excited but when I used it, my performance had completely disappointed me, I wrote horribly dry and cut the lines in several places.
So furious I decided to start the claim via paypal to get the refund, everything was going well and I just had to send it to the country of which Poland is and then paypal gave me my money.
But suddenly everything got terrible against me because of the fault of the postal service of my country since they sent the pen to the United States instead of Poland and according to them they were going to solve this problem but no, they did it again and I lost the Paypal case because of him and the guy who scammed me went unpunished.
So I ran out of my money and with a defective product so I resigned myself to staying with her and decided to send her to a nibmeister to fix these problems and he told me that the nib tines were too tight and that the tip was wrong made and deformed and that is why he wrote so badly.
So he told me that he gave the correct shape to the tip and increased its ink flow to write wet.
The pen just arrived a few days ago after his visit with the nibmeister and indeed the nib writes quite wet but my problems are not over yet, now what happens is that the fountain pen when I just recharged writes quite wet and smooth and without any failure in the strokes but ... after a while it begins to write something drier and begins to omit strokes. -_-
Before sending the pen with the nibmeister it already presented a flow that was decreasing and terrible but I attributed it more to the nib.
So now the problem is the feed?
The pen suffers a lot from ink starvation after a while writing, in my opinion it is quite unacceptable even my cheapest pens do not show these symptoms.
Then he sold me a pen with nib and defective feed? .. what a scammer was that guy who sold it to me.   :wallbash:
I am currently devastated I have invested this pen enough money to almost reach the price of a new MB149. :gaah:
I don't even know what it has if the fountain pen needs a new feed and I should send it to the Montblanc service, or if I leave it in oblivion, pure frustration has brought me, the dream turned into a nightmare !! All I wanted was for my dream pen to write as well as it looks. :(

I'm sorry to hear your tale of woe. :(

I have a MB 146 that had misalignment and would not write only at odd angles. Luckily I got it back gushing by the nib specialist, Gena at Custom Nib Studio :)

Have you thought about checking with your nib person again and let them know the flow is starving again?

Another thing to try, maybe if ink is dried:

  • Empty the pen, flush cool water, soak for 10 mins
  • you can even wrap a napkin/paper towel to protect the nib during the soak
  • re-ink with a wetter ink like Waterman's

Hopefully you will get more options from others.

Good luck

Hi, thanks for commenting on my thread.
Right now I just sent the nibmeister a message explaining the problems presented by the pen to give me his opinion about the possible causes of the problem.
I am not sure if I have old ink in the feed I rinsed it a long time and did not get good results.
It is that in itself when it is freshly loaded with ink, it writes super wet and without missing a single stroke and then begins to decrease the flow to something more normal without becoming dry but then there it begins to skip strokes and it is quite frustrating.
Skip a letter and then keep writing normal for a while and then skip strokes again.

The inks used in it are Montblanc Lavender Purple and Montblanc Sand of the Desert that work great on my other fountain pens.

A terrible experience indeed, I feel your pain.

A technical question (just for my curiousity, if I may ask): what kind of claim did you start via paypal? I mean did you contact the seller first asking for the return (and refund) and consequently asked for the return via paypal claim?

Anyway, these flow issues are not extremely rare. And often it does not necessarilly mean anything is defected. I have had a 146 freshly returned from MB service with a completely new body and feed but skipping a bit. A few fillings and it works fine. Somethimes a long soaking helps quite a bit.

What suprises me though is the fact that it came not working properly from the nibmeister, I would expect a decent testing before shipping it back to you.

Seeking a Parker Duofold Centennial cap top medallion/cover/decal.
My Mosaic Black Centennial MK2 lost it (used to have silver color decal).

Preferably MK2. MK3 or MK1 is also OK as long as it fits.
Preferably EU.

Right now I did a test with plain copy paper and other papers and the pen works great.

The problem only appears in rhodia paper which is what I have been using often.

Rhodia as many other coated papers works in a weird way with quite a few of my objectively good pens. Edited by aurore

I am very afraid of buying used pens because my little experience can lead to disastrous purchases.
My only pen experience was a Faber Castell e-motion black that has the worst nib I've ever written in my life!

Do not give up.

Quite natural. Though it is not that tricky. I have owned tons of pens, 95% were bought used and only a couple were troublesome.

Expert experience and knowledge! This is its differential!

  • 3 weeks later...

The fountain pen still had quite a few omissions of strokes not only in rhodia but also in plain copy paper.

Recently I got the tool to open the piston of the Montblanc 149 since it was quite rigid, the same piston that according to the subject who sold it to me assured me that he had just given Montblanc service and pure lies. :roller1:
Since he sold it to me apart from all the problems I had mentioned from the beginning, the piston was always rigid and he told me that I was there and that I didn't know anything.
So yesterday I decided to open the piston of my Montblanc 149 and it was quite difficult to open the piston, it took me quite a while as if it had glue or something like that and when I finally opened it I found that the piston is in a quite dirty condition and that the threads of the piston were full of garbage or rust.
The inside of the boom near the piston had quite unpleasant dirt and the piston seal was completely dry without any lubrication.
So I cleaned the inside of the pen with water and Q tipes, regarding the metal of the piston I don't know how to remove that rust or that dirt since with water and toothbrush I couldn't remove it at all.
I put silicone grease on the piston seal to lubricate it and then proceeded to install it.
And now the pen works better even in rhodia paper, it still has some omissions of strokes in rhodia but much less frequently, I have not yet tried it on copy paper and cheap, but I can assure you that it has significantly improved the flow since I I lubricated the piston.
Now I have the doubt if the piston also influences the flow of ink?
And I also can't believe the lack of honesty of that person who sold me the pen, he gave it to me with a defective nib and with the piston quite dirty and if that was dirty the piston I don't want to imagine what things the feed will have.
