Stolen St Dupont Fountain Pen

On August 26, 2019 this pen was pickpocketed out of my bag in a CTA bus. I've never been pickpocketed in Chicago so it comes as a shock to me but the pen was missing when I got home.

 

Such a shame, it was one of the best pens I've handled and I even sold my other pens to fund this relatively big purchase. This particular ST Dupont Olympio L is not common and can be easily identified by the diamondhead textured cap. If you see one going around please let me know. It had blue ink on that day.

Sorry to read about your pen. Crime should be persecuted. Have you file a complain to the transit authorities?

I am checking ebay, craigslist, Facebook, etc., and have already contacted CPD and CTA. CTA may be able to review the onboard camera since I know what bus it was.

This pen is not easily seen so I'm hoping it will be easy to spot if it ever turns up locally. Is it a good idea to contact local pawn shops about it as well? There are more than a few...

Did you record the serial number? Chances are the pen will never turn up, but knowing the serial number will help with ownership claims if it does.

 

If I were a pick pocket I wouldn't know what to do with that pen, so I would probably try to pawn it (but I'm not a criminal so I probably don't know what they think). Although, I think pawn shops are supposed to do some due diligence to make sure they aren't buying stolen merchandise.

 

Considering how many pawn shops there are in Chicago you're probably out of luck–probably start with the ones closest to where the pen was stolen and along the bus route. Also, create a few eBay alerts though I'm doubtful the thief would sell on eBay (too easy to trace back to them).

I am guessing that the thief had/has no idea what the pen is worth. I just looked it up, wow. I would also hazard a guess that a pawn shop would also have no idea what it is worth, at least not any pawn shop I have been in (not been in more than 10 to 15).

 

My sad conclusion is that it is unlikely that you will find it circulating for sale.

Before you even start checking pawn shops you'll need a police report. Even if you did find the pen (a BIG if), the pawn shop would not even consider returning it to you unless there was a report that it was stolen and they were contacted by the police.

Nothing personal, but the CPD has better things to do. This is hours of work that needs to go to bigger problems. Personally, I think that, if they did review tapes, they will find more serious crimes taking place. Plus, you could have easily accidentally dropped it or simply misplaced it. I hope the latter. If there is a lost and found for the CTA, I would check it. I have found wallets and other things of value on public transit and handed it over to authorities.

I hate that attitude. "They have better things to do." No, they don't. They can reassign someone from speed trap duty easily enough. Basically, anyone that's doing "Tax Revenue" patrol is doing something that can be dropped to follow up on standard thefts.

Well, I hate the hate attitude. I think that you need to go on a ride-along with a police officer.

Seriously: I prefer the speed traps/revenue makers, because they are not sitting around for long.
