Just as an update on the screw, I don't know what that corrosion is, but it's not normal rust.

 

I pulled mine apart (It's the "Not really a 3008" 3008), and cleaned the screw with hot water. A bunch of the corrosion flaked off. I then used scotchbrite on it, and most of the rest came off, leaving a smooth finish. The last bit I used a brass dremel brush, to clean the edges, and it has minor pitting that almost looks like it started off that way. (I also tossed the clip. I keep it in my pants pocket or a pen case, and in neither case do I need a clip)

Finally I exchanged the screws of my 3008s - they were heavily corroded and the material crunched when opening the screw cap. M5 x 10mm screws are a little bit longer than the original ones but fitted perfectly.

they changed the ws3008 screws to a corrosion resistant flathead. also changed the filling system to that of the 698

Good news. But I think there are lots of older ones in the wild. The replacement of the rusty screws is very easily done and makes a lot of sense.
