Dip Pens & India Ink For Everyday Writing

The potato perplexes me -- doesn't it leave a damp STARCH coating on the nib?

I have never tried the potato method, but if it does leave starch on the nib, it should wash right off in water (in theory), since sugars will dissolve in water much more readily than that film of oil will. I have spoken to some people who swear by the potato, and not all of them were Irish!

I'm Irish descent, the tater trick works lol. Every so often you wipe the nib and give yer spud a poke then let er dry. Helps to have a couple nibs in holders ready to roll so you can swap and keep writing.

I havent ever dipped out of my main ink bottle but out of little closable dishes, its almost never in that dish long enough for sitb to develope before it gets flushed. I never return that ink to the supply vottle, so i dont know if the starch will contaminate ink or not.
