David and I have a similar interest in this fine company. He goes deeper and wider, but occasionally we meet up - here's my Desert Eclipse to pair with his. I've held off on a number of their pens, but this material was too good to let pass (Mazzucchelli celluloid):

Wonderful pen! Congratulations! Nice photo too

I have swapped in a 14Kt cursive italic nib from fpnibs dot com in mine. It is wonderful, currently inked with Leonardo Noce Moscato.

Beautiful pen!  I believe you meant "cellulose acetate", which is nevertheless very nice material.

Well, yes, but... to the best of my knowledge, there are a number of chemical formulations - cellulose acetate being one, cellulose nitrate being another - that fall under the group description celluloid. I chose that term as a common use description. It is, indeed, cellulose acetate that Mazzucchelli is using here.

- Cellulose nitrate is known as nitrocellulose.
- Celluloid is made with cellulose nitrate and camphor.
- Cellulose acetate is a chemically different compound/material again, with properties different from cellulose nitrate and celluloid.
So they are all not equivalent to each other.

Point taken, as I am not a chemical engineer, etc. I think it is common to find pen enthusiasts using the term celluloid somewhat loosely (by your definitions), but especially when examining vintage items, with no documentation, it is very hard for a lay person to know the specific natures and materials. Beyond this, even within the industry the term is used.  Please see the example below, which illuminates the difficulty for end users. I'm aware that Mazzucchelli makes cellulose acetate but thought it could be termed celluloid as well.

That is a darn beautiful pen!! Congrats.

I may have missed it, but which nib did you get?

I think the Leonardo's 1.1 Stubs are the best nibs out there at the moment.

Thank you, I am enjoying it visually and in writing. I think I mentioned (sorry if I didn't): I was so late in the announcement (still less than 24 hours!) that by the time I went to the site, all they had were XF. Not my style, but it is good to have nibs of differing sizes - my preferred writers are all italic nibs of around .5mm, usually ground from an M. Nonetheless, the nib was about 95% ok for me (I'm left-handed so teeny points can be an issue). I smoothed it just a little and put in a recent ink I purchased in Japan ("Latin Quartier Jimbocho" from BunguBox), a lovely very dark coffee brown, and it really writes nicely. I may have smoothed it just a bi tcloser to an F, which is ok, too.

I'd like to try those Leo stubs but they are just too big of a swath of ink for my handwriting. They work very well for David!

Less than 24h in and you were late!! 😱

I also enjoy a variety of nibs, although my preferred are wide stubs. But there are always situations when you need different widths (or just for the enjoyment of variety).

But you gave me an idea to send some M nibs to Masuyama for grinding to CI and Stubs!!

I do know that the Leonardo stubs work for David, in fact it was his photos that convinced me to try the Leonardos! 🙂

I just received my first Leonardo pen last night, a Special Edition Momento Zero Grande in LeonArco Gold Amethyst celluloid with a 1.1mm stub 14k #8 nib. This is my dream celluloid. I’ve always wanted an Arco bronze pen, but when I first saw this back in October on the Leonardo site I was gobsmacked. It’s like they pulled the ideal version of Arco for me out of my subconscious. I didn’t have the funds to get one then, and they of course rapidly sold out of the three available, so I thought I was out of luck for the foreseeable future. However, come last Friday I’m looking around for a Christmas present for myself and noticed Leonardo had put three more of these beauties up for sale. I just had to snag one, and so I did. They shipped it out this Wednesday from Naples, and DHL got it to me two days later in North East Ohio. I have another Leonardo on order (a Dodici Mosaico with a #8 stub as well) that should come in early next year, but after having and holding this one, I think I see more celluloid special editions in my future.

Congratulations! That is a remarkable pen. I agree with your assessment of the Leonardo 14 kt #8 stub. Dare I suggest you should learn italic handwriting to fully appreciate its merit? 😊

A very striking pen, all the more so knowing how much it means to you. There is such personal value in a rare item, and I am certain you will cherish it for years. As a side note, I also enjoy Sailor Shigure!
