Leonardo Photo Thread

Michael R.

Recommended Posts

After a couple of years of admiring the photos on this thread, I finally have my own to offer.  I returned from our holiday in Italy with my first italian fountain pen.  I was looking for a gold nib but fell in love with Stilo Fetti’s latest collaboration with Leonardo.  I was pleasantly surprised to find out how smoothly Leonardo’s steel nibs write.

I do fear the white paper may have been screwing up my exposure.  I’ll try to get better photos on a different background but, for now, here’s what I have to offer.

Truly handsome. Oddly, I like it best when closed, and those 2 blue bands on either side of the cap band are a very lovely touch. Congratulations on a unique pen.

Hi Interesting design.

What is the barrel made from.

looked on the like but not very informative.

seems a good price, and what nib does it have?

The pen is based on Leonardo’s Momento Zero without the blind cap that can be removed to use the converter like a piston filler.  I believe that was so you’d remove the wood parts before filling which seemed smart to me since ink on wood would be difficult to clean.  The color and grain pattern of the barrel looks very much like walnut.  There is a texture that looks slightly different than the eastern walnut and black walnut I’ve worked with so it could be rosewood or a similar European dark wood that I don’t know about.  Rosewood would make sense as it is often used for tool handles.  The section and rim of the cap is Leonardo’s mango mosaico resin.  I don’t know what the blue resin is.  The nib is a steel Leonardo nib stamped with Stilo Fetti’s 753 logo which is for their 7 Kings series of pens and the date of the birth of Rome.  I believe Leonardo’s still using Jowo for their steel nibs.  I believe their in-house La Fenice nibs have a different feed.  I would have preferred one of Leonardo’s in-house gold La Fenice nibs but that wasn’t an option and I really liked the look and feel of this pen.  I can always talk to Leonardo about a replacement nib but I was pleasantly surprised by this particular nib.  It feels smoother than any of my other Jowo nibs (FPNibs and Franklin Christoph).  Feels as smooth or close to my Pilot Custom medium.  Maybe they tune them in-house, I don’t know.

Congratulations! There's no turning back (from Leonardo pens), you know,. 🤣

Leonardo does use JoWo nibs. Salvatore does tune their nibs before installing them. Some or their pens have ebonite feeds made in house, rather than the stock JoWo plastic ones.

I’m sure if (let’s be honest…when) I buy one of their La Fenice nibs, it’ll be a stub.  They seem delightful.  Since this is the “Photo Thread” I tried to get a few better photos.

I’ve wanted a Leonardo since I joined FPN.  I’ve been following this thread closely admiring all the beautiful resins.  I wish I liked the MZG the most.  They make that model in so many gorgeous resins and celluloids.  Unfortunately, I prefer the smaller MZ and Magico.  When a Magico comes up with a gold nib and a resin/hardware color combo I can’t resist, I will be ordering that stub.  If I was ever going to pick a grail pen, the Magico would be it.  In the meantime, I’m thrilled with this pen.

I totally get it. While I prefer largish (not "oversize") pens for writing, they are too big to fit securely in my shirt breast pockets. I like the Magicos a lot as EDC's, although even those are a bit big for many of my Summer shirts. In the Summer, I find a Pelikan M600 or Aurora Optima more "fitting."

I do like the Momento Magico materials that first came out. Currently, Leonardo is making the prettiest ones in very limited numbers for specific pen shops. These are easy to miss out on, unless you spend all your time cruising from one pen shop's web site to another. Leonardo's own web site does list a lot of MMagicos in pretty materials under "Special Offer."

Happy writing!

This is such a mess of a material combinations, but somehow it just WORKS so well!  I don't know how someone came up with it, because I never would have thought to put those colors and materials together, but I applaud them for the daring and the fun end result!!  Congratulations on the cool pen and great writer!

Last month, Leonardo released a Limited Edition Momento Magico for a shop in Salerno. It's made with a Jonathon Brooks custom resin and has rose gold hardware. I think it's truly gorgeous. The only challenge was finding a dry enough ink to show off the stub nib's line variation. Visconti Sepia seems to work.

Very handsome, David. That is one of the nicest pairings with RG trim I've seen. It isn't a colorway I would look for, but I really like how this, and a number of Jon's other blanks, have captured a somewhat organic look. Excellent addition to your burgeoning collection.

Thanks for your comment, Jon.  If you haven't viewed the interview Joost Appelboom did with Jonathon Brooks, it's on YouTube.  I think you would enjoy it. He talks about his search for an art form that would let him exploit his talent for working with color. I have always been intrigued, as a child development specialist, in individuals' discovery of their unique strengths. As an artist, you might relate to this from your own perspective.

The store is called "La Cartoleria Srl." Their web site is in Italian only. My sense is that it hasn't had the history of online sales and tourist business that the shops in Rome, Florence, or Milan have. But the owner, Amedeo Li Bovi, seems interested in growing his business.
