David, overall that is just an astoundingly fine pen. Many congrats. I had seen they were headed into a lever-fill pen, but is there something new-ish about it, or is it really just a new lever-fill pen? I like that the design they chose to replicate is very much like the Waterman lever boxes. I'd ask you to bring it to next years SF show, but you'd likely need a cargo van at that point for all your Leo's!!

I didn't know they made cargo vans that big. 🤣

Leonardo has claimed the lever filler is a novel design Ciro Matrone developed. It has features for easier cleaning that I don't yet know enough about. I'm working on it. Stay tuned!

I'm a career percussionist - believe me, they have BIG vans! I'll look forward to what you discover with the new design. Thanks for writing about it, in advance.

I may ask for moving van recommendations.

I have emailed Salvatore. I'll post whatever I learn.

I have a Joe Cali made from a Mazzucchelli celluloid.

Lovely stuff.

What an interesting material, with all that shimmer too!  I was curious about those lever fillers!  Thank you for posting close-up photos @dms525.  Personally, I added one of the beautiful Pink Candle MZGs from their recent selection, but the amazing octopus raden art pen in their special edition collection was something else!  If only it had been within my budget.

Salvatore sent me information about the new "lateral filler" pen design, including annotated photos of the pen disassembled. I can share the photos, if desired, but here's the essence: The nib and feed are friction fit and removable. But, here's the new element: The section to which the sac is attached with shellac is also friction fit. So, presumably, one can more easily and thoroughly clean the sac of old ink by pulling the section, removing the nib and feed and then flushing the sac with water.

I have asked Salvatore to verify my understanding and will correct this if I missed the point.

Happy writing!

Thanks, David. That's an interesting approach.

@dms525 I think about all of us who have vintage Esterbrook pens are curious how Leonardo has made your beautiful new pen easier to clean.

Are there stretch vans?  I think I’ve seen them.

I assume you are not talking about fashionable shoes. Here's what Salvatore sent me:

Leonardo Arborea Beech. A limited edition for Stilograph Corsani in faceted ebonite with a 14Kt #8 1.1 stub nib. It is a handsome pen with a wonderful nib. A joy to write with.

One of Salvatore's specially ground "CSI" ("Cusive smooth italic") nibs was also offered at a premium, but this nib would be hard to improve on. Well, I find no fault with it, but the one CSI nib I have is awfully good.

This nib is both smooth and crisp. It is conducive to the kind of rhythmic cursive italic writing that is most desired. I am delighted with it.

Interesting, I have to ask to Salvatore if the  same procedure can be applied to my Audace lever filler.

Does anyone know if a Leonardo pen with a 14K gold Jowo nib will fit a 14K La Fenice nib (which Leonardo makes in-house), or only the steel version of the La Fenice (which is still made by Jowo)?

Their #6 JoWo (with Leonardo's new La Fenice stamping included) and #6 in-house nibs are interchangeable.  The only thing to watch out for is how far you seat the nib.  The in-house La Fenice nibs seem to need to be seated a couple mm farther out before the housing affects their curvature negatively.  With a gap of 2-3mm between the housing and the nib size engraving on the nib.  Whereas JoWo-Leonardo nibs can fit almost up to the nib designation letter.  That's been my personal experience anyway, and if you look at photos of in-house nibs, many of them show a pretty shallowly seated nib vs average.  To the point where when one of my MZGs arrived, I thought the nib was partially pulled out.

On the other hand, be careful that the nib is not so shallowly seated that the nib abuts the inside of the cap. I have bent the tines of two nibs I didn't push back into the carrier quite far enough.

Thank you, that's very good to know. I've wanted to replace my Leonardo MZG Art Deco's Jowo nib with one of the new 14k La Fenice nibs to complete its art deco style, but obviously had to make sure they were interchangeable in the first place before I buy a pen with the new nib. The only issue now is finding a model that would look good with the old Leonardo Jowo nib design...

WOW! An assortment of nibs, or any specific preferences?

All have 1.1 stubs. My everyday writing is italic. The only round nibs I use regularly are for signing official documents with my semi-legible doctor's scrawl.
