Leonardo MZ Grande GOLDEN RULE - 1.1 italic

Ink: Leonardo Red passion.

Fantastic photo! I actually like the amount of red visible among the golden brown material. And the ink is perfect

Ha! If mine comes with that much red in it I'm going to scream! I specifically asked how much variation in the material was in this recipe, and was told that the head person at LOI said there was very little variation, that they pretty much all looked like the original photos. Which is what I like.

My first Brooks - the Vesuvio - burned me in this way, and I tried to get a handle on this one. I don't want to do "catch and release" and I'm happy to play with a little variation, but the above colorway is not was was advertised through visual means. Imagine ordering an Arco Verde pen and having some other color intruding in the material.

This is all very personal, and obviously not meant to sway anyone else's aesthetics in any way - we're all different in our tastes. At the end of the day, though, it is a lot of money to be rolling the dice on how a pen is going to look. With this much variation, they should show 3 different pens to give a better idea of what one might get.

Geez... fingers crossed.

The first time the seller sent me a photo of the cap, I was worried about it. I was afraid if it was going to be too much red for me. but, as soon as it arrived to my hands, it was clear to me. I fall in love with it.

I assume not everyone likes this pattern. Afortunatelly I had luck, and that was not my case.

I agree when you say they should show 3 different pens to give a better idea of the possible variations.

Hope you will get one with little variations.

Kind regards.

Ah, thanks, I'm hopeful it will work out, but only time will tell. I just saw another posted today that had a fair amount of red in it. In the couple hundred pens I own, there are almost no red pens, so that gives you an idea. Other people go in just the other direction!

If this one turns out not-pleasing, it may be the last time I purchase a pen sight-unseen. I love the level of their artistry and workmanship, but you have to love the way a pen presents itself, too.

"When Men differ in Opinion, both Sides ought equally to have the Advantage of being heard by the Publick; and that when Truth and Error have fair Play, the former is always an overmatch for the latter."

I dearly love the Positano material! I also have a Furore Grande Positano, but with gold plated hardware and nib and with a stub. I am generally not an over-sized pen fan, but this is such a pleasure to use.

Enjoy yours!

Goodness, that's beautiful!  I'm sorry now that I allowed the initial stock photos to sway me away from ordering this one.  If I'd known how much red there would be and how well it would integrate with the other colours, I'd definitely have pressed the button.

Congratulations and enjoy your new pen.  If the other new one is the Primary Manipulation 4 I can't wait to see the photos!  Actually, I'm looking forward to seeing what it is, regardless.

I agree David! I've been using the pen this week, such a nice soft writer! Also not so big, must be the tapering sigar shape.

I've heard there may be a second batch coming.  Not sure how soon though.

Very nice, David. I don't usually like these glittery materials but in this case the red and the gold go extremely well with the gold trim. A very nice joint effort of Leonardo and J. Brooks.

Yes, there's definitely a second batch of the Primary Manipulation 4, and I think also of the Golden Rule.  I was told they'd start releasing in March.  I'm holding off for the moment simply because I've just bought something else and now have a Santini on my radar for the next purchase.

My MZG Stromboli 1.3 is one of my favourite pens so I might look again at these later in the year if they're still available.

Edit

Looking at Stilo&Stile earlier today it now seems as though the second batches will be releasing in April rather than March.

The second pen I received yesterday is a Leonardo Momento Zero Alga.

Like the other Leonardo pens made from stacked acrylic, the MZGrande Sand and the MZ Blue Hawaii, it looks as if it were faceted. Very attractive.

The nib is a JoWo steel 1.1 stub, and it is crisp but smooth.

I’ve had that exact pen in a basket twice during the past couple of weeks 😄. It looks gorgeous but I’ve already got a MZ with the 1.1 steel stub so I keep holding off ordering another. The one I’ve got is the best steel 1.1 stub I’ve used - I usually prefer a slightly wider stub nib. Another pen which I’m sure you’ll enjoy.

I received my MZG Golden Rule pen today. I have some mixed feelings about it. Sorry I haven’t got a picture just now - I will try to add one tomorrow.

Positives:

  • It writes exceptionally smoothly, with a luscious ink flow, no hard starts or skips. Completely reliable
  • I went for the fine elastic nib on this one. It works very well in giving a soft, bouncy feel for writing. Very pleasant and I recommend it. Though, for anyone expecting line variation, this nib gives only slightly more than any regular nib. It is not a flex nib by any means, so I think they named the nib correctly

Negatives:

  • The nib is a fine but it puts down a line that I would say is at least a western medium. It is broader than many mediums I have and certainly broader than I like. I will have to see if a drier ink will tame it a bit
  • The acrylic on mine has not much red in it - there is a vein of red on the cap and some patches on the piston knob. The barrel is completely golden brown swirls so it looks like molten bronze. It looks very metallic and under strong light it comes to life, but most of the time it looks a bit cheap. I think for this model it is a lot better if you get a decent amount of red in the mix

I've got some growth on a Momento Zero with a gold nib.  It's a screw in unit, and came out easily.  Upon removal of the nib unit, a black rubbery bit came out with it.  It's not an O-ring, it could be a thread sealer maybe but i've never seen this before if it is.  Anybody have any ideas?

Very nice, I've been tempted by this one too! :D

Goes nicely with your green bowl!
How come rhodium trim with green, this time?

It's nice that Leonardo is not asking us for extra money for these stacked resins... sounds like a wise policy.

Does this one come with a Jowo nib/feed?

Did you check whether these come in standard Jowo housing, or is the Leonardo housing proprietary?

thanks

Thanks! This is a lovely pen.

Chatterley  is selling a series of Montegrappa Extra's made with stacked resins. I wonder if they come from the same source. Frankly, I think the Leonardo resins are more attractive visually. This material can look dramatically different, depending on how it is sliced. I believe the MZ Grande Sand and one of the Cuspide pens (can't remember the color name, offhand) are made from the same material, just with different cutting angles.

I don't recall why I went with the rhodium hardware. I do generally prefer gold with green.

This pen has a screw-in, standard JoWo nib and feed. It can be swapped with other standard #6 JoWo nibs. However, I have not inclination to do so, since the steel nib it came with writes so beautifully.

Well I'm feeling like a proper grown up today! I just received my first Leonardo and I have to admit (as someone who very rarely buys 'new' pens, it is rather lovely.

It's a Momento Zero LE in Dark Hawaii with a piston fill mechanism (which was what tipped the balance), and an excellent stub nib. I'm delighted with it.

It's much grander and more heavily decorated than the sort of pens I normally use, and makes me feel as though I should be waving it around and casting spells with it.

Fantastic service from the excellent Roy at Izods (no affiliation, just a very happy customer) who also provided a bottle of the delicious Robert Oster Ruthenium and got my pen to me less than 24 hours after I'd had the sudden wish to buy it.
