Which Pen Do You Have Your Fpr #6 Ultraflex Nib + Ebonite Feed Hanging Out In?

Title says it all. I want to buy the FPR #6 ultraflex nib and accompanying ebonite feed, but don't have a pen that takes #6 nibs currently! I have a couple ideas for what I'd like to grab, but am curious as to what y'all are using. :)

A Jowo threaded section would be easiest. According to this list: Bexley, Conklin, Edison, Faber Castell, Franklin Christoph, Goulet, Taccia, TWSBI, and I'll add Ranga and Opus 88.

Add lightness and simplicate.

That's a neat list of brands, thank you! Though I was more wondering about specific models that people enjoy with this nib+feed combo. :)

I'm not sure the ebonite feed will fit inside a JoWo threaded section - though you could certainly give it a try! My attempts to fit the #5.5 nibs into TWSBIs and other pens with the smaller 5.1mm ebonite feed weren't successful - the feed lacks the 'tail' you find on the plastic feeds, which create a channel for the ink to flow through from the ink reservoir, and you end up with an air bubble forming that inhibits flow.

I bought a #6 Himalaya with ultraflex nib a couple of months ago ($32 I think, plus , and have been loving it. That would be my number 1 pick - and it means you're not having to look for a "receptor" pen. You could ask Kevin (the head honcho at FPR) if he has any other recommendations - he doesn't seem to have any on his site at the moment but I'd also suggest checking out Ranga Pens (eyedropper versions), or Guider or ASA Pens.

HERESY - HERESY only when you are satisfied that the FPR ultraflex and feed can do what you want, I would not fool around with trying to retrofit an old pen with one. The best, and probably most efficatius use of your dollars would be to buy and FPR pen fitted by Kevin with the upgrade in one of his #6 bodies like the Himalaya. If (even with fiddling to get your style best served) you like that configuration, then the purchase of an UF nib and feed and retrofit to another pen might be tried.

I just took advantage (and do not know if it is srill up) of the 33 per cent on one ultra-flex #6 pen and two plain flex nibs a three pen deal that only came to $42+ shipping....or as we say here along the Mexican border -- A GANGA! The, if fleased you can order extra UF niobs and feeds that you need at very reasonable prices with great service.

I've heard tons of folks say that the Himalaya and Darjeeling have a quite powerful smell to them; has them been the case in your experience?

The Darjeeling yes, the Himalaya not really - maybe the fill mechanism (which is made of vegetal resin), but not the acrylic. In any case, the smell dissipates over time...

The Himalaya is, in my view, the nicest pen in the FPR lineuo, and the best value for money. Well worth the $$$.

Good to know, thank you very much! The Kali Black acrylic does look sharp!

I had the same initial thoughts as the title of this thread indicates--get a nib and feed from Kevin and pair it with something else--but then figured, why not just get the whole package? I wanted the ultraflex nib for cartoon drawing, since I've been using flexible dip pens for years, but wanted a fountain pen to carry out and about without needing to bring an ink bottle. I don't have any vintage flex pens, and all the modern pens I'd tried were a bit too stiff or railroading too much to do the job.

I just received my Himalaya with ultra-flex and ebonite body the other day, and first impressions for drawing way exceed my expectations. Almost identical feel and flexibility to my favorite dip pen nib (Gillot 170), even if the Gillot is a wee bit finer at its finest. And of course the FPR nib is twenty times smoother than any quill nib I've used. No railroading so far. Using Noodler's Black, but will experiment with other inks. Next step is to try it as an eyedropper filler for long drawing sessions.

So my opinion is, if you want that nib, it isn't much more expensive to get the whole package. The Himalaya is a truly lovely pen.

The number 6 Ultraflex FPR unit fits in an Opus 88 pen?

I wouldn't assume it - at least, not without modification. In my experience the FPR nibs are a little hard to wedge into JoWo nib assemblies.

It can be bought from fpr as a unit that screws in though

The screw-in unit is definitely not threaded the same as a JoWo unit - they're not interchangeable. A JoWo nib will fit into the FPR asembly, but an FPR nib will be a tight jam (if it fits at all) into a JoWo assembly.

A picture is sometimes worth a thousand words - so here's my essay :) :

Thanks, but I'm still confused. I'm asking if the fpr Ultra flex nib unit will fit in an Opus 88 (specifically the Koloro model) - either the five or the 6. The links and info provided so far haven't actually answered that question - unless there's something staring me in the face that I'm missing*.

*I realise I might be being completely dense here

Sorry, just came back to the thread. I *believe* Opus uses a #5 JoWo nib for its 88 Koloro (that's what the Goulet Pens website seems to indicate) - in which case the advice I gave above may be incorrect. FPR #6 nibs won't readily fit into a JoWo #6 assembly, but the #5.5 from FPR is much closer in fit to a JoWo #5.

I've just rammed my #5.5 Ultraflex nib into a JoWo #5 nib assembly - it's a pretty snug fit, but no more so than the original nib! I don't own an Opus 88, so can't tell you *for sure* that it'll work, but I'd say it's promising...
