Been tempted to get a Justus 95 or the Custom 845......have had hard time deciding and unfortunately, I have no place to try them. So have to get pens online.

Any thoughts about differences between them writing wise....let's ignore the cost difference for now....

Thanks,

Mark

The cost difference is huge and not easy to ignore but I’ll give it a shot. Both pens are stellar writers. Period. The 845 feels more premium in the hand, as it should, but purely seen from a nib perspective I don’t feel that the 845 is a better (or worse) writer than the Justus. They’re different but both nibs are great. It all depends on personal preference. The 845 has a #15 18k nib, the Justus has a smaller 14k nib that is adjustable. Goulet only seems to sell the Justus in F and the 845 in F, M and B. Appelboom sells the Justus in F and M and the 845 in F, M and B.

Comparing an 845 and a Justus, both with F nibs (as I’ve done), my personal subjective experience is that in the Soft setting the Justus feels very close to the 845. The main difference between the S and H settings on the Justus isn’t softness but ink flow. There is a noticeable increase in softness and a _very_ noticeable increase in wetness (as always depending on ink, paper and writing pressure). To summarize I’d say that the Justus in the S setting can get you very very close to the feel of the nib of an 845 and in addition it offers you a lot more in the H setting - or any point in between. Therefore I did not buy the 845 myself, but I did buy two Justus 95’s. One with F nib, one with M nib which Anabelle turned into an amazing mini-stub for me.

I’d venture that the Justus is one of the very few pens that might be called a ‘modern classic’ (the others being the Diplomat Aero, the Visconti Homo sapiens Lava Bronze and the recent Montblanc calligraphy pens). I’m a fan. Having said that, just as often I grab my Custom 74 instead. The nib on that entry-level gold-nibbed pen is simply stellar and I cannot say that I always prefer the Justus over the C74. A good nib is simply a good nib and pretty much every Pilot has a good nib.

Good luck deciding!

Thank you so much for all your detailed info and input about your the two pens, DutchGuy. Greatly appreciate it!

Your comment about the 845 nib having a bit of softness to it is interesting to hear since several YouTube videos I watched yesterday said that the nib is rigid but quite smooth.

i generally prefer nibs that have a bit of give or softness to them,  but don’t like nibs that are ‘semi-toddy’.

Interesting to hear about the C74 pen. I’ll have to check it out, but as I recall it’s a slimmer, lighter pen, correct? Size-wise, I like pens with some girth to barrel and section and not too light weight.

Very hard to make decision when you can’t hold and try pen before purchasing.
