Sorting Ink Bottles And Samples

Cast

Recommended Posts

I am trying to organise my accumulated inks. I started out sorting them by bottle versus sample. Then I thought it might be better to sort by brand, since the bottles were the same size. Then it occurred to me that sorting by color might be the better solution.

How do you sort your inks?

I do brand then colour, that way my shelves/cupboards look slightly uniform.

My inks occupy one shelf of a Laywers bookcase. They are sorted by company with my favorites of each closer to the front. In my database they are sorted alphabetically by manufacturer then by color.

How do you sort your inks?

In the first instance, as space in the different trays would allow. Bottled inks of the same brand and product line tend to have the same shaped bottles and/or retail boxes, and naturally lend themselves to be grouped together in the first 'level' of sorting.

(The space in my desk reserved for inks is starting to burst at the seams, though, now that my collection has grown even larger, and with six other bottles on their way here.)

The next level(s) of sorting... well, that depends. For example:

The folio case with the fluoro yellow rim (shown in the top left corner), that is holding 21 bottles of Monteverde inks from two product lines (and largely came as two 10-bottle sets, one for each product line), has them grouped by product line, and then sorted by name alphabetically.

The tray of (largely) 30ml Diamine 'regular' inks (shown in the bottom right corner) has the bottles grouped by colour, and then very loosely by the semantic meaning of the names in the orthogonal direction:

I TETRIS-sort them into the box that is reserved for my inks. I startet giving away those that do not fit in anymore and are my least favourite. (maybe that is not an option for you :P )

This.

I have a cardboard box which holds not only all my and my wife's ink, but also all my spare parts and most of my tools and other supplies, including a small Oxy-clean tub that holds all of my (mostly empty) sample vials. I do not advocate this as a solution, but I'm nowhere near motivated enough to find or make something good. Noodler's takes up about 1.7 rows, with my beloved's Stormy Grey and Emerald of Chivor finishing out the second, and loose bottles of my various other inks fill the rest of the bottom. I've given away two of my inks, a 4.5oz bottle of Borealis Black, and a bottle of Waterman Violet. I may yet give away more.

It also holds all the pens that I really ought to give away, because I don't like using them. I need to go through those again.

People sort their inks?

Mine are pretty random in about 6 different locations. I do keep a bottle of Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Black on my desk because that's the one I refill regularly.

In my fantasy, it would be a smaller collection on a shelf where I could see them all at once.
