A Blue Lamy 2000 Coming

What Lamy is doing is what Nintendo always does. Artificially create scarcity to trick people into buying their product at an absurd price. Nintendo does this all the time, the SNES classic, their stupid Amiibo's, they make just about 25-50% fewer than the demand is there for, and that just makes people go crazy. It's underhanded and deceitful. Beanie babies did the same thing. If lamy wanted to make a super special edition that earned an eye-watering price tag, why not follow what Platinum did and make a lamy 2000 out of sterling silver and charge $3000 for it. This costs them nothing extra to make. Just some blue makrolon instead of black.

You are really taking this personally!

These companies are creating real scarcity, because they are limiting the numbers of items produced. And then they are charging what they think that the items will sell for.

Want to prove to them that their pricing model is wrong? Don't buy. Buy others will buy. So their pricing model is correct.

IMHO Bird Splat does this with every pen that they make. "Precious Resin" my backside!

Did Picasso sell single paintings or millions of prints?

Andy Warhol just changed the colors of soup cans and made millions! Anyone could have done that, but he did first.

Want an inexpensive alternate colored 2000? Made your own. Sell them as "fantasy" or "homage" or whatever.

Make a million bucks! I won't take it personally if you do.

Hmm...so it will be more of a blue-black or even blue-gray.

It looks like its sold out already in the U.K.

I was toying with the idea, but I guess my mind has been made up for me.

Yeah, I'll get right on all that custom tooling and build my own ten million dollar machine shop

You're kind of making a straw man argument and pointing at caveat emptor as a valuable consumer tactic. It's BS.

Just because some people are willing to pay it does not change the fact that it is inherently anticonsumer in its implementation. With the golbal economy we live in, it's all but impossible to say "just don't buy it." Because there's always someone with enough money.

My main point is that Lamy is just not doing something that's good business practice for themselves. Lamy has a long history of screwing things up by trying to play this scarcity game. It's artificial scarcity because they readily have the means and materials to make enough to meet demand. It's not like they only have access to a foreign factory for a limited run. They're making the pen in-house on their machines. They could easily meet market demand and sell this pen for a 10% markup over the normal one and limit its run to a year. But they're banking on this hype to try to whip up a frenzy for future products. It works for nintendo. Because of their nonsense scarcity, people go berserk trying to get the latest nintendo product. But my argument is that for such a niche product like a fountain pen, that just isn't the case. They're also pricing the pen out of a lot of potential customer's range. I'd buy one in a heartbeat at $150-165. If they did the same thing they did with the safari and released a new color every year, I'd be hard pressed to not convince myself to buy it every year. They could make thousands from me as a customer if they treated me with a little respect.

Sorry for my ignorance, but is this the official release day, or the shipping delivery estimate? Lamy have been very vague regarding release ("in September"). Goulet have a lottery, as others have noted, for which the entry deadline is 20th September. I'm not sure of other US stockists of the 1919 LE, but that would suggest the earliest possible date for release in the US is 21st September. I wonder if Lamy are going for a synchronised worldwide release, or if it will be more haphazard (e.g. Germany tomorrow, US in two and a half weeks etc)? I was very fortunate to get a UK preorder, so I'm just chomping at the bit 😄

Either way, I'm very excited to see it!

I supposed stock is quite abundant here in Germany as you can purchase up to 30 pieces simultaneously according to the Lamy official website’s system. I’ve placed my order from last Saturday to secure one for myself and another for my friend and I should receive a dispatch notification by today. Unfortunately I didn’t. Will probably give a call to Lamy tomorrow to clear things up. On the website it’s stated that the fountain pen is immediately available and the delivery estimate is one to two working days. Yes I agree on what you said regarding the fact that Lamy is always uncertain about the release date. Two weeks ago I rang Lamy up and the representative who picked up my call answered the launch could take place at the beginning or in the middle or by no later than the end of September. So basically her reply was meaningless.

But lamy is run by a bunch of lizard-brained lunatics, so I don't have high hopes.

You are truly getting too excited about this (and kind of insulting all those people who believe that this pen is being sold at an acceptable price point).

I would forget all about the brand and move on to something else.

Finally she confirmed with me that I might receive the pens by the end of this week at the latest. Hooray!

One Reddit user on r/Fountainpens has picked up their pen from a local B&M store and posted some quick photos. It seems like we will indeed get them this week.

It also seems to be a bit darker than I would've thought from the stock photos, but I love dark blue. Looks like it would be a perfect match to Sailor Shikori Yonaga (my favourite dark blue)!

Looks like a deep indigo. Happens to be my favorite color.

I just ordered mine from Fritz Schimpf at a good discount over the MSRP. Also, Stilograph Corsani has them as of today (9/4). 👍

No lottery needed.

Today I found out that my local stockist starts to carry the pen. I regretted a bit because I’ll be able to get a 10% discount if I buy directly from the shop.

However I didn’t see any offered on Fritz Schimpf webstore. It’s already stated as sold out on Stilograph Corsani.

I’ll be getting the pen tomorrow. I quite like the dark blue colour though.
