Compatible Nibs For Diplomat Magnum?

I have been looking through some old compatibility threads but haven't found an answer to my question, so if this has been addressed elsewhere I apologize in advance.

I was wondering what nib is compatible with the Diplomat Magnum. Goulet says the Magnum has a JoWo nib, but doesn't say what size. I know that #5 and #6 are standard sizes, but don't know which is on the Diplomat. The stock Diplomats only come in three nib types and now that I finally got brave enough to change a nib on a Lamy I'm keen to try some others.

Thanks.

Hello essayfaire

The Diplomat Magnum is a #5. I measured it to be 5.1mm

For a time, I had an old 14k Waterman Ideal #2 flex nib on it.

It worked ok.

In case you're curious, the feed is friction fit. I had a hell of a time getting it out. There was a white earwax type substance in the channel that was the root cause of all the flow problems.

Good luck

That sounds above my pay grade then. I have only just swapped a nib and my understanding was that Lamys are among the easiest nibs to change. Thanks for helping!

Friction fit nibs aren't necessarily hard to change - as long as the manufacturer hasn't introduced some kind of glue or solvent it's relatively straightforward. Carefully, gently pull and wiggle the nib and feed until both slide out, replace the nib and slowly, gently place the nib/feed back in as a unit. If the fit is tight, just be patient and use a piece of rubber or non-stick material to help you grip without damaging the nib or feed.

I can't speak for the Magnum specifically or evan's experience, but I've changed plenty of friction-fit nibs and am no expert. Perhaps you would be up to the task!

This sounds quite similar to how I changed the Lamy EF to an Italic. I was scared of damaging the nib but it worked out fine. Thanks for the boost!

I like the Magnum nib, so I moved it to a Jinhao 992 where it sits perfectly. those are better pens for me than the magnum body.

Maybe that will help you open up a list of possible nibs? Anything that sits on a Jinhao No.5 nib?

I have a number of Jinhaos - the sparkly ones (450 or 750), a cool shark, and a red hooded one with an EF that has poor ink flow. I'd be willing to tear anything but the shark apart. I am new to swapping out nibs; how do I tell which nib is on the pens?

Thanks for the tip!

The 450 and 750 use No.6 size nibs, which isn't compatible.
The hooded nibs won't be compatible.

This applies to No.5 sized exposed nibs only. Look up photos of the Jinhao 992 model to see what I mean. I think all Jinhao No.5 exposed nibs will be the same, so anything that looks like that, long as it's a size 5 (not 6).
