J.b.'s Perfect Pen Flush Discontinued?

This seems to be unavailable from all the usual sellers and some of them now seem to be selling their own brand of pen flush. Has it been discontinued?

Hi MCN,

It sure looks that way... nobody seems to have it... not even Indy Pen Dance... the quasi-origin of the "precious juice."

IIRC,... from what I've read... JB was an associate of Richard Binder years ago... when Binder retired... most of what was "Binder Industries"... :D ...shifted over to his prize winning pupils... who went on to become the owners of Indy Pen Dance... and they don't have it themselves.

So, my guess is it off the market... w/o so much of a whisper. Which is how it usually works... who wants to invest the time or advertising dollars to announce a product is going OFF the market.

That said,... fortunately, for us, you can easily make your own flush.

Use distilled water for the base,... add 15% CLEAR Household Ammonia and 1% Dawn dish soap... and Bob's your uncle. :D

However, some inks, like Noodler's Bay State inks... and others... respond better to bleach,... so you'll probably want to make two versions... that's what I did... using distilled water for the base and adding 15% Clorox and 1% Dawn.

Just make sure you keep them well separated and NEVER, EVER use them back to back unless you very thoroughly flush the pen with plain water between using the two different flushes.

Be well and enjoy life. :)

Great advice Anthony.....and the ease of making home made, doomed it.

I'd not known of the drop or two of liquid soap.... Doubt if Germany has a version of Dawn/Fairy. Don't have non-sudsing nor ammonia cleaning products at all that I know of. I get my ammonia from my local pharmacy. It being stronger, have to dilute more.

Ages ago, when I got my JB, I stopped using my own.

I had to order that delivered to my motel, when I went to the States some 8 years ago.....a $35 package from Richard including JB, would have cost $35.00 :yikes: to mail to Germany.

The reason I stopped ordering books from Stand or Barns and Noble.....was that extreme high postage. UPS&FedEX, bribed Congress, that the USPS was cut loose and had to come up with all the Government pensions of the postal service and deposit money for future retirement pensions. All at once.

And worst of all UPS&FedEX made Congress pass a law saying the US postal service couldn't bribe Congress........... :o.....must be the only company in the whole wide world that can't.

When the Germans cut loose their postal service, the German Government kept on paying the pensions and portions the workers earned...as it should (the workers had put trust into being a government worker so were paid less for job security) .....so German post is 1/3 cheaper than US. ...

I read that many states like Kansas are no longer paying out full state worker pensions.........a thought that makes me ill. America has become so second world.

I've personally discovered that DIY pen flush (at least in the USA) is less expensive than than the commercial brands. Perhaps I helped contribute to the demise...

I make my own pen flush as well. Though I can also highly recommend J. Herbin pen flush which can be found for much more reasonable prices imported from European vendors. Soaking in J. Herbin cleaning solution ended up giving me better results than with a homemade flush. I've read this comparison before buying my first 50ml bottle:

I think "JB" was Jim Baer. I bought a couple of pens from Richard, and each was "Binderized by Jim Baer". He was, and might still be, a member of FPN.

I use a 1:10 mix of ammonia and water. JB's Perfect Pen Flush probably used distilled water and added something as surfactant.

JB's may also have disappeared because many of the Retailers that used to carry JB's now have their own Pen Flush...and Monteverde has a Pen Flush too, which many of the retailers now carry.

Here's a good website explaining why bleach and ammonia should never come into contact with each other:
