Got 10 Pens Inked And I Want To Ink More :(

I too am coming to same conclusion especially in my meager price bracket.

That is a lot of pens, it is going to take me a while to get there. Maybe never. sad.png

Some of those 33 must dry out before you get to them?

Even if you rotate 4 a day, you will only use each pen once every 8 days for a few hours.

OTOH, I would need a chart to remember the pen/ink combo. biggrin.png

Actually I have many pens that won't dry out even after months of not being used. I do use a spreadsheet to track my pens, ink, and when things have been used. The youtube channel Figboot on Pens created a EDC spreadsheet that works great for this. It also gives you some good stats.

Here is a link to the youtube video on how to use it as well as links to download it.

I suggest finding out which is the best index card, so the ink shows itself best and keeping your pen and ink on a card in a small plastic index card box. At that cost there is no reason to use second best.

:headsmack:The last time I was in the States nearly a decade ago, I'd forgotten to write down which were the best index cards.....so ended up with what ever was there....which was not the very best. :crybaby:

Even so.....one grabs one of one's too many filled pens.....and has to go to the index card box to find out exactly which green, or purple one has inked in that pen.

Width and flex of the nib will give different values to an ink.........as proven by Sandy1's fine reviews....along with paper of course.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

Ransom Bucket cost me many of my pictures taken by a poor camera that was finally tossed. Luckily, the Chicken Scratch pictures also vanished.

Hi Tseg,

I have around 20 pens inked and in service right now.

But I do try to keep it at 15, though,... just so that when it comes time to rotate, the flushing work isn't too mind numbing. :D

20! What's your use look like? I've got two inked and that's more than I can find use for. For the longest time I was one at a time, but I've got green ink in my L2K and don't like leaving shared notes in anything other than blue or blue black. It takes me 2 weeks to a month to drain a pen.

Edit: I just remembered I left a pen inked in it's box in my trunk. I was supposed to meet someone to sell it and he backed out. So I guess I've got three inked...

I get stressed out when I have 4-5 pens inked because it takes me about 1-2 months to get through a piston filler, though I think about inking up 3 others all the time! My ideal is 3 pens inked. Wish I could be as generous as you all are with number of pens inked. So many inks I want to use!!

Hi Bemon, et al,

I have 7 of my 12 pens inked, with one pen being out for nib work.

A comfortable number of pens inked seems to be 3 - 5 for me. Anything more and it starts to feel like I'm not giving each pen enough "write time". I recently started leaving one pen at work all the time just to have one on hand that I'm not carrying back and forth. It's just a Wing Sung 3008, so no great loss if it grows legs. And another two pens are inked just to help me decide if I want to sell them or not...

I'd really love to see what it's like to have just one pen inked (and just use it until it runs dry). I like having different inks available to use though, so I haven't been able to convince myself to try it yet. Plus, rotating pens like that means more pen cleaning than I feel is actually needed. Currently, when I write a pen dry, I just refill it and then it sits till I want to use it again. I just don't like writing a pen dry and then putting it away without cleaning it. I worry that some of the ink will dry inside it...so keeping the pens I like to use most inked all the time seems to be easier in my mind, lol.

So you journal with them at home and leave your work pens at the office? Which ones do you leave at work?

Hi 1nkulus,

The possibilities stagger the mind... :ninja: ...because what's shown above constitutes only around 5% of my pen collection and maybe even less of my ink library. :o

Believe it or not... I'm jealous... I wish I could keep it at 4/5 pens, but playing with colors is like glue and bennies to me.

It's a lot of fun... for a while,... but then there's always that crash landing when you have to flush them all. :o

:D

Hi Bemon,

I keep both a business journal... and a personal one... and everything is color-coded for easy reference if I ever want to go back and research anything.

I also de-stress and collect my thoughts by spending 10-20 minutes every evening, just writing jibberish in a rainbow of color. :)

The pens that stay at work are one of my Platinum dual-stand desk sets, my first L2K and a couple of 51s.

I used to use a lot of colour. I just opened up a new notebook (off topic, but I think Leuctuurm changed their paper for the worse), and was looking through the one I just finished. It's a sea of blue shades- mostly deep blue. Occasionally green, occasionally a deep red. I guess I made my mind up!

I do try to write a little at home- short stories. But it's hard enough to blend 60 some odd hours of work a week with family responsibilities. ...Not that playing with my 3 year old daughter is a responsibility, it should go without saying that it's the best part of my day... But it's hard to find time to write!

Time was when I'd have 10-12 pens inked at a time. But I'd use some more than others, and the ones I used less would start to gunk up, etc. So I got out of that habit (mostly by not carrying a 12-pen case to work anymore).

These days, I have four inked that come back and forth to work with me, as well as a Pilot Plumix italic that stays on my desk inked. It's enough for me.

That would make it over 500 pens and 700 inks. yikes.gif

I once tried to make a list of pens I would like to buy, irrespective of price, and was unable to reach 140.

The ink is easier, as I only use a few waterproof inks. The other inks are tried via friends/samples.

I only buy Diamine inks to support the company, but rarely use them.

Down to 3 pens, another one ran out of ink.

Having mostly piston pens, I seldom ink to more than 1/3 often 1/4th only.....still takes for ever to drain a pen sometimes with @ 17 pens inked.

the title should not have a frowny :( .

Smile! :) and I assure OP that he is not alone.

how many colours does a set of crayons have?

I fill inks up in pens that preserve the integrity of inks properly enough, I.e. without much evaporation of inks and inks do not dry up in these pens. That is extremely important to me.

IIRC, Adular Blue is De Atramentis rather than Diamine.

The other two are from Diamine.

Hi 1nkulus,

Yup. While I did over-estimate the ink tally; the pen tally @ 500 isn't far off the mark at all.

I had stopped counting my pens at the 150 or so mark... and that was 2.5/3 years ago. (I'd say the ink tally is probably on par with the pen tally).

One of these days, I'm gonna have to put aside the time to count (and catalog) them all...

...I really should... if for nothing else, but insurance purposes.

Sometimes you'll hear the old timers here talk about the "Pen of the Week" Club... well,... I'm a charter member of the "Pen of the Day" Club... at least, I used to be.

I've refined my purchases a lot in recent months. :)

Diamine inks are great inks... so are DeAtramentis inks, Helen,... so don't worry about it.

Be well. :)
