Montblanc 149 Filler Nob Repair With New Helical Rod.

Hi All,

Got a MB 149 filler nob with a broken helical rod still in it

but broken so there's only about one inch left still fixed to the

inside fixing. I can still see the C clip in place holding the remains of the old helical rod.

Does anyone know how I can replace the old broken helical rod with a new one I can get from Roger Wolff

at Custom Pen Parts. May be someone out there has already done this job?

regards

Hi

It's not an easy job getting the old one out. I did read somewhere about one method that involved drilling a small hole in the end of the cap than using a thin drift to knock the old helical rod out, then if you can get the new one with spring clip attached back in you just plugged the small hole with some black filler.

Another method was to drill out the old one then tap some treads in the enlarged hole and then use a threaded ring to hold the new helical rod in place. I recall the article being light on detail, like although it mentioned what size thread to cut it failed to mention were to get the threaded ring from.

If you have not done this before send it out to a repair person, or send it to Montblanc for repair. Advice here, on such a difficult repair, is fairly meaningless.

Its a very common fault btw, hence the availability by Roger (Custom pen parts) of far superior PEEK helical rods. The fault occurs when people carry on turning the knob, after the piston has "bottomed" stripping thread and eventually breaking the quite weak rod.

No point trying to help then :(

Having repaired these pens, I do not agree that there is a need to drill the top of the turning knob. The "c" ring holding the helical spiral can be removed. It's not a job I like doing, so avoid where I can and refer it to others.
