Rossa. Red, my old Montegrappa Extra non 1930:

As always, an incredible composition highlighting a lovely pen and stunning drawings!

Do you mind sharing what ink you were using? It looks lovely against those ivory pages.

No surprise - my photographic skills would do for a bad one only...

It's a Black Bamboo, a pen that fascinates me for a long time, bought from a fellow fpner. I can't wait to see it in the flesh - and I mustd say that your pictures of the pen were instrumental in my decision... hey, that's FPN...!

The ink was an old Blue-Black by Montblanc. It had the advantage that it was waterproof. I have no idea if the actual version of this ink has the same properties though.

Thank you for letting me know Fpupulin... It's a wonderful colour, and a shame that it's one of the previous versions (I rue the fact that the newer MB BlueBlacks are not as rich as some of the previous ones).

Lovely image of the Montegrappa, by the way... and yet again, wonderful taste in (matching) ink!

fpupilin, post n° 47, about the Black Bamboo: While the original Fine nib of this pen was excellent, the stub nib with which I replaced it is among my best nibs, if not the best ever. Elastic, flexible, flowing, juicy, it is everything you can expect from a high-end nib.

Curiously, this nib has a heart-shaped vent hole, which I've never seen on any other Extra pen by Montegrappa. Produced in Italy during the first age of the Aquila management, it is a nib no. 8 with a very elegant design, but I have no idea which other pen has ever been fitted as standard.

In the video review of the Riverwood model by Fontoplumo, one can see a new generation Black Bamboo (with the new section) fitted with a heart hole (3'38'')

It's home! Beautiful pen, I still have to see it under the sun or under a decent natural light, but the pics I saw are very faithful to what I have in the hand.

The nib is an EF, luckily a bicolor one; it's a long time since I've used an EF nib for anything else but short notes. The nib is really something, very precise line, not stiff but quite rigid indeed.

I've had trouble with the piston: not because it's not well done but because I've trouble to adjust to binary choices (either, or; east, west; left, right) and that the piston knob does not give you any indication about filling the pen and there is no ink windows. Short story: I've used the pen empty for half of the evening, finding it dry and skippy... (the good side: I can see that the feed hold a lot of ink). I probably have yet to find a good ink for the pen

But what is really stunning is the balance of the pen: Montegrappa are really close to perfection here.

Will that pen be in rotation? Sure. Will I do serious writing with it? Maybe not since I've been spoiled by juicy B or BB vintage Pelikan nibs. But the Extra 1930 will introduce a nice and sometimes needed change for my hand, so I will see with time. For now, I am planning to take it with me in my planner so I can use it whenever I need to write anything so I can come to know the pen a little better.

Finally, I do feel the hitch: these Montegrappa really are something! And since I've seen the Riverwood, and noticed you can order your own design on the Montegrappa site (hello Ebony wood!), I definitely want another one... even if i'ts not likely to happen.

Thanks to every one posting here, I've had hours of pleasure looking at all these stunning Montegrappas, and it was a lot of help dealing with the urge to hold one in my hands!

Cheers!

I have been following this thread for several months. It inspired me to purchase an Extra Otto Zebra with a stub nib.

Congratulations! This thread is easily one of the most beautiful threads on FPN with so many well photographed Montegrappa Extras

First of all, congratulations for your new pen! Secondly, your description of the extra-fine nib of the Montegrappa Extra is perfect: rigid but not stiff, and very precise.

I use it a lot to write on the small pocket journal where I am taking note of the plants I am photographing day by day. They frequently have long scientific names, and the extra-fine nib shines for its precision writing small letters!

Enjoy your great pen in good health!

Grazie Franco. I chose a stub nib based on your Extra Otto Shiny Lines review. Very nice indeed.

It is such a pleasure to see how this little old thread on the Montegrappa Extra has evolved to inspire others to indulge. Here is a latest photo of the current state of my collection of Extra's. The Otto Malachite is my favourite thus far.
