IMO, the fact that it weighs 35g unposted, is the make or break parameter.

To a certain extent you can overlook design elements in a pen but you cannot ignore heft and girth.

I really enjoyed mine for the couple of weeks i had it until the weight combined with the loose clip caused it to fall out of my shirt pocket while picking up some kitchen roll from the tiled floor. The cap over the twist filler broke completely off.

Someone pointed out when I was researching mine that the Makrolon version is probably more bullet proof than the steel version. If only because the weight of the steel version would increase the liklihood that it would break when it hits the floor.

I have both and recently replaced the nib section on my old Makrolon version due to a crack. and decided to upgrade to the steel version because I thought it might be longer lasting. It might be so long as I don't drop it!

I like the pocket clip on the Al Star and Safari, but not so much on the 2000. It also appears to me the cap may not be reliably secure. Since I carry a pen in the button area, this could be disasterous.

Yup. I did that for a while, but I lost one pen and had another shirt destroyed. Though I've always felt the cap on my L2K's secures well.
