New Platinum 3776 Sf Super Scratchy And Dry Help?

RedSquare

Recommended Posts

I had a 3776 SF that I bought new, and it was also dry. Not the most pleasant writing experience. A nibmeister can definitely adjust the flow.

I've had better luck with Platinum's SM nibs. Pilot's soft nibs seem to run a little more wet in my experience.

some people say a pen for writing Asian characters should be this or that, dry and precise and what not. I have seen very beautiful Asian characters written with all sorts of pens, including ball point pens. And I have seen hideous Asian characters written with Sailor Naginata Togi and other higher range specialty nibs.

For me, a pen should not scratch, and ink must flow. The rest is a matter of taste and personal preference.

If ink flow is inhibited and compromised for the sake of controlling and ensuring line width, it won't please me and probably some people too.

Some Japanese pens have very finicky ink flow and nib contact with papers. And with iffy quality control or lack thereof, some pens just won't write. Then a nibmeister/technician is your best friend unless you return the pen to the vendor or send it back to the manufacturer.

of course, inks and papers can do wonders - and a change of writing habits.

OP hasn't spoken, I wonder if his problem is solved.

Wow, I had not realized there were any replies to my question! Thank you all for your input. I was planning to send the pen back, but apparently it will cost half of what I paid for it to return it. The seller said they would reimburse the cost to return it, but it seems like quite a process. I think I will take your advice and send it to be tuned. It is impossible for me to adjust it myself.

You are all so kind, I really appreciate your help.

Another dry and dissatisfying 3776! The Bourgogne SF I got in 2017 was really unpleasant to write with and hardly delivered ink, before I pulled out the nib and feed, gave it a thorough wash and widened the (almost non-existant) gap between the tines (which were perfectly aligned, though). Afterwards it was okay and became better after a while.
