Pen Show Advice

HI! I've been a "lurker" on this sight for a while now and haven't really chosen to post anything, so this is my first time. Sorry if this is in the wrong place, still getting the hang of things.

I'm a young fountain pen enthusiast who's been in the hobby for a while now. I've amassed a decent collection of pens, Lamy, Pilot, Conklin, Cross, etc. as well as an assortment of inks and notebooks. I also run a pen review blog in my spare time. Recently, I found out there is a pen show in my area, the Atlanta Pen Show, and am planning to attend. I was curious as to what the policy is for younger attendees, and if this is well looked upon in the fountain pen community. I am also curious if there is anything I should bring to the show, such as pens, a bag, or a notepad.

I'd love to hear your feedback! Thanks,

Ben

Hi Ben! You are going to love your first pen show. There are usually quite a few younger attendees at pen shows and as far as I know all are warmly welcomed. If there are any type of restrictions, they should be on the show web site.

As for what to expect and bring, definitely bring some pens and paper. You'll want to try out other people's pens on paper that you're familiar with and take notes for future reference. Bags are helpful as well, but make sure it isn't too big otherwise people will bump into it and you'll get tired of carrying it around. For more info, I wrote a blog post about attending your first fountain pen show that you'll hopefully find helpful. Have fun!

I've got a blog!

Well, it really depends on what you mean by "young." At the shows I've been to, under 13 years of age is usually free or less expensive than adult, and above 13 there are no policies to speak of. Anyone of any age is welcome at pen shows (or at least the ones that I have been to). What to bring? A small notepad that you like to use if you want something to write in that you are familiar with, or pens with nibs that you want to get tuned, repaired, or appraised, but other than that, I would just bring yourself. Bags are usually complimentary. Shows are a great opportunity to meet some great people and to expand your pen knowledge, so good luck!

And I actually run a little blog as well, so good luck with yours!

Pen shows are great, heading this weekend to the Little Rock show! Cash is king, some vendors with vintage pens don't deal in plastic. Lots of inks to try and pens to ogle! It is nice to ask in advance to pick up pens especially expensive ones. Some folks let you dip test pens some may not. Always good to ask if the pen pulls or threads.
