Hi, I was thinking about buying my first TWSBI pen and I'm confused about which one I should buy. I've shortlisted the TWSBI Eco, TWSBI 580 and TWSBI Vac 700. If it were up to you, which pen would you buy and recommend?

If you have the money, out of that group I would go with the 580. A bit better construction than the Eco and the piston filler is a bit less fiddly than the vacuum filler of the Vac. It's all personal preference though.

I have the 580AL... on one hand it is a rock solid pen with a good look, on the other hand I've not warmed up to the cold, slippery metal section. The section is also a bit narrow to my liking.

The 580AL. Most integrated design, nice build quality. The 700 is a little big and the step down falls in the wrong place.

If you like posting, the only option are the mini pens (the mini and vac mini) and the GO. TWSBI pens SUCK at posting.

I actually kind of hate the 580 and can't put my finger on why.

The 700 is definitely the best pen if you can tolerate it not posting. The vac mini is probably my favorite overall.

For the curious, the pens and inks in use were a TWSBI Eco EF with Noodler's Prime of the Commons 50%, and a TWSBI Go F with Noodler's Provoke the Puritan. Do note that the line widths are exactly the same.

TWSBI make beautiful & attractive demonstrator piston fillers but most of them are prone to cracking. So if what you are looking for is just a beautiful pen then go for it but don't expect to last as much as Pelikans, Parkers, Montblancs etc

If you get one just take good care of it & do not disassemble it unless absolutely necessary which could be when piston needs lubrication or some other serious issue which can't be solved without disassembling it.

Hi HB,

Just so you know... The Classic posts, too. ;)

Hi RD,

FWIW, I have the Eco, the Classic and the 580AL... I haven't tried any others, but I lean towards the 580, myself.

Whichever one you choose, I hope you pick a winner. :)

I have a great many fantastic vintage pens, but my everyday carries are TWSBI's. My main one is a Vac Mini and my secondary one is a Mini Rose Gold. I have a few Eco's as well. My Vac Mini has a few tiny cracks in the bottom threads. TWSBI sent me a new part right away, but I haven't gotten around to replacing it for over a year, and it's fine. Nothing's happened to the cracks or the body of the pen.

I'm a huge fan of TWSBI. They've never let me down, hold a ton of ink and are solidly built. If you like a big pen get the 580 or 700. If you don't like metal sections (like me) then don't get the 580 AL. If you like slimmer pens, the Traditional is good, and medium pens, especially if you like to post, the Mini is the way to go.

I find the ECO a bit big, and it doesn't post well, though the later ones seem to have less of a problem than the earlier ones. But it's a great way to introduce kids into the hobby without spending much money. I got my son the ECO-T and it's a fine pen he enjoyed writing with.

I have two TWSBI'S, a 580 and an Eco. The 580 gets the most use by far. I did have the clip on the original cap break off. I think in part due stress created by by clipping to the placket of a golf shirt over time. Replaced quickly. Mine is the non AL version. I like it better in the hand than the Eco. Part of that is the cap itself. It seems so much larger on the Eco.
