Mb 149 Expression Nib - Calligraphy?

Pravda,

I didn't know the rule when I first posted those 2019-release pen pictures, and I removed them after I heard that.

As for the Calligraphy pens, they're the elephants in the room. You can find product info and pictures in both MB site (partially) and reseller's site already.

https://www.montblanc.com/en-gb/pim-collection/writing-instruments/meisterstueck/119699-meisterstueck-resin-yg-flex-nib.html

https://appelboom.com/montblanc-meisterstuck-solitaire-calligraphy-gold-leaf-le-grand-flex-fountain-pen-119700/

I think that can be considered as released?

Also, I am not sure what do you mean by "in this thread its clear the same happened several times over the last few days"?

I didn't post another un-released pen picture. That's a false claim.

As for your previous question: Why is he wearing nail polish?

I asked, it's the hand of the sales at boutique, not his hand.

Hello Nonozon.. by previous I mean other members have posted photos and they were removed. The moderator also commented that one shouldnt, and we are expected to wait until the release date irrespective what other internet portals are showing.

If one is curious to how come the photos of the pens arent posted until today, strange considering that many like myself has owned the pens for a week, a read of the previous posts wouldve explained it :)

Personally I have no feelings towards it, I just adhere to the rules so that a post with so much valuable information doesnt get totally shut down.

Anyway, if youre buying the pen let me know what you think of it. Ive had difficulty with mine (146) still trying to figure it out.

Hi Pravda, thanks for the info. I deleted those pictures.

Personally, i really like the Gold leaf on 146, but I'm used to 149-sized pens for daily use.

Hope there would be a 149 flex nib go beyond regular "precise resin" someday.

Eagerly waiting for more reviews. I’ve had a couple of Montblanc 149s that I eventually sold. If the flex is as good as people say, this might be the 149 I keep in my collection.

For early adopters, after several days of back & forth with Hamburg (Montblanc nib department) I feel responsible to tell you to heed my warning in confirming that you try your pens before purchasing.

The 149 is a true flex nib, you need to put effort not to flex it too much. It goes from very fine to very broad effortlessly. The 2 pens I have tried are nothing short of wonderful.

The 146 Gold Leaf, so far is a disappointment. You need to put a lot of effort to flex it (at which stage its scratchy) and when it springs back its quite dry. In effect, it feels almost a regular 146 nib that you are trying to spring.

Official / written confirmation from Montblanc is pending (whether the 5 nibs I personally tried are 'bad apples'). But if you're buying online without trying in person a 146, keep this in consideration.

can you give us a writing sample of the 149?

I tried the 149 the other day...if you don't flex at all and put veeeeeery little pressure on it, it writes like an EEEEEF to my taste :) is that correct?

And sometimes it skips

I believe it can flex more if I put more pressure on the nib. I need more practice and courage. :)

It might skip due to your writing style and inks. I recommend wetter inks in the flex like Jacques Herbin.

The 2 I tried at the boutique were inked with Royal Blue. No skip whatsoever, unless you over-flex and it railroads.

It is true, when zero pressure its supposed to write very fine like a EF I would say. But it doesnt need much effort to make it go wow broad.

Essentially the main difference between the 2 is that the 149 was so sensitive that even when no intention to flex the natural ups and downs of your script will make it produce line variation.

The 146 on the other hand is very rigid and you need to make it a point to flex it.

I tried the 149 and the nib is very easy to use. But I purchased the 146 as I like the gold leaf on the pen. The nib on the 146 needs a lot of pressure compared to the 149 to go broad. And when you put the pressure on it moving downwards there will be (at least in my case and handwriting) nearly no ink when moving the nib upwards. That looked really crappy so I returned the pen and closed the chapter flex nib on a 146 for me. Now I am considering to purchase the 149 as it worked better for me.

Pravda, and if you really like the 146 gold leaf maybe you can buy it with the standard nib if the expression one is not right to the way you are writing and your personal taste?

Not in love with the Gold Leaf and with the regular black ruthenium nib its just another Montblanc.

Really wanted a flex by Montblanc and thought its nicely different thats all. Problem with 149 is that I already have 9 various versions of it. Really dont need a 10th.

But anyway, glad I am not dreaming it up the issues with the 146 now that Axis tried and reported the exact same.

I just inked up the 149 for the first time with Homer Greek Blue, no issues with skipping, it writes perfectly. Easily flexes from EF to 1.3mm Broad without effort, very similar to my 1950s Pelikan 400 and more recent Omas fine nibs. Its lovely 😊

Saw the black 149 this morning at Appelboom’s store and was very, very, very tempted to try it. But I didn’t, because its 905 euro price tag is more than I am willing to spend on a pen and I did not want to waste their time. But if and when I change my mind about spending that much on a pen, this one is at the top of my list!

Yes I understand your feeling. I haven't yet see it in real but it is a good thing for my wallet there is so much issue with the 146 nib. As I have only one 149 (standard model with the modern nib bought few years ago) I could buy the 149 with expression nib in the future but for the moment I'm waiting the Great Characters at the end of the year. Your experience and feedback, Pravda and Axis, are really helpful for the forum and for me in particularly.

Can you draw the finest line possible? Does it skip then?

I really am in love with this but my favourite modern flex is the Pilot 912 FA , I took a chance and bought the Wahl Decoband superflex and was so disappointed, it was a very wet writer and the nib was nowhere near as soft as the 912.

I really hope the 149 is leaning more to the FA than the Wahl... does anyone have any thoughts ?

Pardon my ugly handwriting. I compared the writing from a few pens, including Pilot FA nib. The Montblanc 149 writes the thinnest. I will do another around of comparison with flexing.

Now that I have actually seen this pen in a store, I can’t stop thinking about it. Strange. My rational mind tells me that a visit to Akkerman in The Hague is much more sensible, to personally try out every Pilot Falcon they have in stock and to save myself 600 euros. Or to order a 912FA from Rakuten (for 200 euros all-in) and save 700 euros. Or to just stick with my Justus 95, my vintage Boston pens and my Homo Sapiens Midi, all of which produce wonderful, subtle line width variation when writing normally, and save 900 euros. But in my mind I still hear that 149 calling my name when I walked by it.

Sorry for my bad handwriting :)

I have the Pilot FA Nib and the MB Expression Nib.

They write different. Maybe because the Pilot is broken in or something...but it flex waaaaay more and it is easier to flex than the MB.

But look for yourself.

Pilot writes thicker than MB and is more wet, same ink I think...I forgot what I put into my Pilot.

~ Cyrille:

After the 2019 Great Characters, it might be possible to begin 2020 with careful consideration of the 149 Expression Nib.

If so, any images you'd share would be of great interest, especially handwriting samples.
