How Many Pens Do You Have?

Recommended Posts

I feel like I've already replied to this thread, so forgive me if I have...

I am at 11, but 4 of those are cheap Wing Sungs, so I almost consider them disposable. I am planning my 12th purchase and I'm casually interested in whatever the new Pelikan M80X release is in 2019.

If money were no object, I would also get a Visconti Medici and probably a Wahl Eversharp Decoband oversize, but I haven't found a buyer for my kidney...yet.

Whatever the number (41) it is just enough. No immediate need for more and can't bear to part with any.

What you said describes perfectly my situation too. The only thing is that I realise "no immediate need for more" is rational, but "can't bear to part with any" is emotional. And that's where I have the dilemma. And the emotion seems to win every time, sigh.

I have 8 pens.

Yet I have 7 colours of ink cartridges that are still waiting to be used in a pen... :yikes:

Can't bear to part with any is also rational.

Why should I have to make unpleasant choices when that would only upset me? Rational thought means looking after #1 and keeping me happy.

Emotional thought would mean buying or selling pens for no reason at all. That's not my style.

I always have a solid rational reason even if it is only rational to me. I am #1.

You have reached equilibrium, congratulations! :)

Ok, Ok I can’t resist any longer.

30, including 3 Platinum Preppy’s, 1 Kuratake Brush pen, 4 Pilot Parallel Pens, and one Jinhao 159. I’ve given away and donated (on the Pay It Forward forum here and elsewhere) 6 more Preppy’s, and several Chinese pens The rest are all “good” pens, what I consider to be quality pens which write well with either decent steel or gold nibs; more than half of the remaining 21 are gold-nibbed.

I’ve sold off several non-Japanese pens over the last 3 years and try to limit myself to 1 “nice” pen purchase a year. This year I got my first Sailor, a 1911 Realo with an extra fine nib. I really like the “character” of the Sailor nib, it’s unique and so I want another one or two Sailor’s in different nib sizes. I have sold off a Falcon broad nib which I regret; it wrote like a paintbrush, so I’ll be getting another one of those when I can.

I do try to acquire quality over quantity and do so mostly slowly.

Pens I still want: Pilot Custom 845 (a grail pen for me), and a Pilot 743 with an FA nib.

I really don’t see myself as a “collector” but as someone who likes to write with and sketch with fountain pens and so like to have a variety of writing characteristics available whether it’s for hours of writing at work, note-taking, or drawing.

I would be happy to come over and help you as I believe helping others is actually helping one's self...

Seeing the two others at your place would also be great joy for me.

A bit over 50.

One less, one more... I remembered I had this no name pen I got as a gift, without a nib, which I probably mangled beyond repair... And a Waterman Laureat which invariably dumps all its in onto the cap... The no name had a sticky rubbery surface, I took some alcohol to it and it's now mostly gone and no longer sticky... And the Waterman nib fits perfectly. Only time will tell if it will be reliable, but at least it's making Asa Gao look good... And the nib is still as smooth as I remember it was.

23 fountain pens and a few dip pens.

Ruth, how do you like the brush pens? Do you use them for painting or calligraphy?

According to me, Calligraphy nibs can vary from stub, italic nibs to any others depending on the manufacturer. Like other standard nibs, calligraphy nibs may be marked with M, F, and B etc. Despite having the same lettering they are generally scaled differently than regular fountain pen nibs. The actual width and nib size would be dependent on the pen line and the manufacturer. Medium calligraphy for one particular brand may be different from that of the other brand. The tip size for calligraphy nibs is often known to vary.

25 fountain pens, including one that's out for tuning, one ordered that should be arriving sometime this coming week, and another one ordered that should arrive in a year or so (custom order, big backlog). Plus one Waterman rollerball that I like, in fact it's the only non-fountain pen that I use. I also discovered several "nice" ballpoints in a drawer that I used to have for work, including a Mont Blanc, and a couple of Crosses. I don't count those because I don't use them.

Some of the 25 are very nice pens, some are quite inexpensive but I keep them because I like writing with them. In fact I bought my 2nd Kaweco Perkeo today because I like the way they write, if only they hadn't made them so they can't be eyedroppered. Those are the only duplicate pens I have. I have a yen for 2 or 3 more special pens, and then I hope that's about it. I might unload 2 or 3 of the pens that I have because they just don't thrill me.
