Dani pulled their stock from all dealers not long after I posted this. The only place to purchase Danitrio in the USA is https://www.urushipen.com/

 

Not ideal. An odd business move. I, for one, used to buy lots of Danitrio. Since then I’ve gotten one. I spent much much more on other brands.

I bought a couple of Genkais from Dromgoole's a few years ago. They are not highly decorated, but they are magnificent writers. The large nibs on the Genkais are outstanding and beautifully decorated.

 

It's unfortunate that Danitrio eliminated their dealer network. I can't imagine a better dealer to represent your company than Larry Dromgoole. I would love to be able to see the 100 kids pen--maybe at a show someday.

I couldn’t agree more. Great guy, great shop, great all around (except for parking…ha!).

Wow, thanks for the picts. My local drug dealer.... hmm, penshop also had the same sort of mini pen show. They also had the 100 kids pen, which is priced at $24K! This year they did not have Yokuzuna with the giant 24k nib. Of course I was so taken by the pens I forgot to take ANY photos.

 

I actually feel really bad, because the pen store knows that I have the ability to buy these pens. However how do I tell them pens that have figurative paintings on them is just not my cup of tea???

I had a pretty good experience with urishipen.com overall. Larry Dromgoole told me that Danitrio, after they pulled all their stock, are now selling their pens for less in Japan than in the US. I don't have any point of reference for what their pricing was more than a couple of months ago, but it seems an odd business move like @jmccarty3 said above.

An odd move perhaps in terms of geographical spread of a physical distribution. But taking out the third party retail function has a m a s s i v e impact on the consolidated profit the brand makes. It is not unusual in luxury goods to see a retail margin of up to 40-50%. That is money in your own pocket if you sell yourself directly to the end-consumer. Next thereto, no store, i.e. no physical presence but only online, means even more savings (rent, shop interior, staff, et.). Brands selling B2C online is here to stay…

It’s still 3rd party not direct sales. A margin of 50%+ is necessary-low production volumes with high COGS cannot sustainably be sold at low margins. Pens being sold online is nothing new. Danitrio being sold online is nothing new. Danitrio sold by one business is new, well, was new. That dealer is not online only either. His business plan included relying on pen shows, of which there have been precious few due to Covid. Hope the business is doing well.
