Adding To The Flock

Thank you :) I first went for the plain black and gold M1000 (F). I would have preferred rhodium but that was what was available. Added the blue rhodium M805 (M) which was very difficult to find and the M605 Stresemann above in a B nib. So not quite as many as you, but they should see me through. The M1000 is currently inked with Robert Oster Black Violet, the M805 with Diamine Monboddo's Hat, and the M605 will get a fill of Kiri-Same later on today or tomorrow.

@Chimera01: Thanks for the lovely photos. You have a beautiful flock. Let us know how you like the classic black and gold M1000. I used to have one and it gave me much enjoyment every time I used it. Tragically, mine was killed in a dry cleaning accident.

I beat the manslaughter rap, but I still wake up every day haunted by the knowledge that the pen died because I was too lazy/distracted/negligent to check the pockets before sending a jacket to the cleaner.

🙈 And obviously THEY didn´t go through the pockets either, which I really would have expected. Poor thingy...

I am STILL waiting on my M1000 (plain black with gold trim, F nib) that I ordered mid November. A little concerned about the chaos with Pelikan too and wondering if I'll ever get the pen now. If I don't, it won't kill me, but I would like to have one M1000 in my small collection of pens.

Icon, holding an icon…😛

If one does a more detailed image search, it is possible to find more pictures this person with a Pelikan 100/101-type model either in his hand or in his jacket pocket.

What I am more fascinated by is the paper he is using. I wonder what paper pad that was.

I ordered mine from Cult Pens Here in the UK. They had a few but they're now out of stock. The website will send you an alert when a particular model comes into stock if you go to the product page. I know a couple of Stresemann M805's came in a few weeks ago but they went fast. If you ask them nicely they may also swap out the nib for you. The M1000 I wound up purchasing was listed with an M nib but they had F nibs among their 'replacement nibs' stock and they swapped it out.

Short of buying on Ebay, it really looks to me like they're just disappearing. I bought my three Pelikans in fairly rapid succession after I saw that the 'Fine Writing Instruments' section of the Pelikan website had been archived. It might all come back stronger than ever - here's hoping - but these should do me :)

The M1000 is probably the finest writing instrument I have ever experienced.

A bit of background: I became disenchanted with fountain pens some years ago and of course almost all my writing was done on laptop, etc. When I read about the Cross Peerless 125 with the proprietorial 18k Sailor nib, I thought why not and tried again. I wound up with five - one F and four M nibs - (almost) overkill if such a thing is possible :) I've since been in touch with John Sorowka - who I've found to be really just wonderful - to see what might done with some of these M nibs to give me a bit more variation in my tools.

From following along here at FPN I took on board what many had been saying about Pelikan. After some fairly extensive research, I overcame my prejudice against things which are difficult to take apart and in mid-December I purchased the first of my flock of three, the M1000.

As wonderful as my M805 and M605 are, the M1000 has become my go-to daily writer. The F nib is wetter and juicier than I expected but still produces a finer line than my M805 (M). The nib is soft and bouncy with far less resistance than the M805 which is more toothy than I expected.  I have not experienced a single skip or hard start, straight out of box (can't say the same for the M805).  I also find that for some reason, my handwriting is more controlled with the larger size pen. A delightful surprise, IMHO the M1000 is nothing short of a masterpiece, a true luxury instrument and a complete joy.

I would have preferred a rhodium and black M1000 but in December 2021 was happy to take what I could find. I'm gutted that I've only just made this discovery as Pelikan fine writing instruments division appears to be massively restructuring or collapsing. But I'm delighted that I've managed to assemble my little flock in a relatively short period of time and hope to enjoy it for many years to come.

Hello, Everybody,

This “new addition” may be a fairly common pen. It is a 1951 or 1952 early #400 in black/green. There is nothing special about this pen, except for the fact that it is perfect: for its simplicity, modular design, performance, versatility, compact size, durability and aesthetics. Pure pleasure to write and draw with, in all nuances of line width and shading…

Also, very easy for maintenence.

Most of all, it is still a rather easy pen to get in good+ condition, for a very moderate price. I find it a far more gratifying writer then a modern M400.

So, if you’re a Pelikan fan and have one in sight, I recommend getting it, if found in a good working condition!

🙂

Thanks to an amazingly generous FPNer (who even went out of the way to make a purchase on my behalf) I have just added a new M800 Burnt Orange to my flock. The pen is currently waiting for me, and I look forward to introducing it to the rest of the flock.

The passion for fountain pens and generosity that abounds amongst the members here never ceases to amaze me. I hope one day I can pay it forward in a similar way.

Ibis, M205 Aquamarine. Ibis won't fill, M205 is even more beautiful than I thought, it's one of those pens I wasn't looking for any more but which got seared into my brain...

Thats really amazing. I know you have been searching for this pen for a while now. I checked recently to see if Akkerman still had it in stock. It turns out, the last one was sold about 3-5 months ago. Anyhow I was able to secure one of my grail pelikans. The Pelikan 500 Tortoise with the matching pencil. It also came with a case, and I payed a fair price for it.

Is the burnt orange your favorite m800? Ancient copper will be your first fill I bet.

Now, looking for a 500 in light tortoise.

To this, the m101n Green Tortoise is my favorite. Followed by the m600 Turquoise, and m101n Red Tortoise.

That m205 Aqua is something to look like. I passed on one not to long ago for $80 NOS. I regret not pulling the trigger.

I kicked myself for a long time for not getting it at a similar price; I'd decided to save for a vintage flex but once I stumbled upon the m205...

:D Ancient Copper would be a good bet. It might also be Smokey Quartz, or Onyx. We'll see what mood I am in when I see it.

I don’t know what my favorite M800 is, and I have not yet seen the Burnt Orange in person (I have the ballpoint, though), but I am fairly certain the Burnt Orange will be in my top 3.

Follow up:

Here is the pen. I find it very lovely in person—better than the photos. It is a nice addition to the flock, and it completes the set for me (I have had the Burnt Orange K800 for a while now).

Now the only question is: with which ink do I, for the first time, ink it up?

Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Black? 🤔 Or something more colourful?

The cap and the finial are not really black, but rather a very dark brown. One only notices when the pen is next to another with a black cap. So I am thinking either Edelstein Onyx (I am out of Brilliant Black in Germany at present, or maybe Iroshizuku Yama-guri. Stay tuned…

...and the winner is... Edelstein Onyx.

Although the dark trim pieces are on the Brunt Orange are actually dark brown, they are difficult to distinguish from black, except in very bright light or next to something that actually is black.

The fine nib is (maybe) a little bit expressive, but basically a flawless but boring round Pelikan grind. Less fat and blobby than usual, and on the narrow side compared to other Pelikan fine grinds.

Overall, it is a wonderful pen that will find a prominent place in my daily rotation. and I look forward to exploring/enjoying the pen further.

@TitoThePencilPimp: After this fill of Onyx is finished, the Ancient Copper is on deck for the next fill... :)

After examining and writing with the Burnt Orange now for an hour or so, it might become a favorite…

You might want to give Edelstein Smoky Quartz a try at some point. It would look very nice in this pen.

May I please offer a hearty second to your excellent suggestion above?

That pen and ink combination would likely be highly satisfactory.
