Maki-e pens really are exquisite examples of Japanese craftsmanship and attention to detail. I am lucky enough that I have no allergic reaction to urushiol oil. I’m sorry to hear that you are allergic, but your wallet is probably very happy that’s the case :). The prices are kind of crazy for maki-e pens, but I consider it an investment in art and culture that has a practical side.

What a lovely pen: shiny and sparkly. :)

Today has been a day of fountain pen disappointment for me. The stains came out of the M205 cap, but it apparently has some scratches. So much for my great eBay deal. Plus, the pens I sent out for repair seems to have come back with one thing fixed and another thing wrong. I’m ready to throw in the towel and sell of everything in my collection that isn’t a Pelikan, a Montblanc, or a Pilot/Namiki. I’m sick of pens with issues!

Thank you! I’m sorry to hear that you are having a difficult fountain pen day. I’ve certainly had my share of those. My most recent time was when I obtained a rare Sheaffer Masterpiece Crest vintage pen. I really wanted to love the little (bleep) but it had a bad leak from the celluloid body. I sent it off to a specialist; he could do nothing to stem the bleeding. I finally had to quit and send the pen back to the seller after expending a good amount of my money trying to fix it. Tomorrow is another day so keep your chin and nib up! Also, its not a bad thing to concentrate on Pelikans, Montblancs and Pilot/Namikis, but some of the fun comes from fooling around with pens that give you trouble here and there :).

I'm so sorry to hear of your troubles

(my experience with professional repairs has been terrible as well).

Coincidentally the three brands you mention are the only ones I trust for modern pens too.

But, I do collect vintage American pens (which I repair myself, given the experiences mentioned above).

If the scratches in your M205 cap aren't too deep, it may be possible to polish them out.

Thanks for the empathy guys. I used to send my pens out to Mr. Mottishaw or Mr. Binder and was usually pretty happy with the results. This time I sent the pens into the manufacturers and not so much. My horses are so time consuming, I really don’t want to try getting into pen repair, too.

Maybe it’s time to cut my losses and send some of my crazy and excessive collection to new homes? Right now, I kind of don’t want them here anymore!

a ricap on the past few months

so the earlier plan was

M600 vibrant orange

M800 stone garden

M101 Lizard

M101 blue grey

Vintage if it happened

what did happen was

Vintage 400NN tortoise

M600 Green o' Green

M805 Vibrant blue (earlier posts)

M101 Lizard turned up (better photo than posted earlier)

fpn_1583449366__p1190064-3_pelikan_m101n

then the M600 Vibrant Orange came round too

fpn_1583449776__p1190074-3_pelikan_m600_

then the M101N blue-grey

fpn_1583449965__p1190122-3_pelikan_m101n

then unexpectedly I run into this M605 solid blue!

fpn_1583450443__p1190107-3_pelikan_m605_

and then the M605 Stresemann! (no pic yet)

the stone garden is still in the wish list

to which I might be adding M800 brown... :)

That lizard is gorgeous! Too bad (or fortunately) the 101N is probably too compact for me.

I just won an eBay auction on a K800 Green and Black W. German Ballpoint to match the rest of my set. It's a bit worn around the central band, so I probably over paid. It and a replacement M600 White and Violet at on their way. I think it's time I stop buying on eBay (I never check the pictures carefully enough) and I should call my collection good for the foreseeable future. I've hoarded enough!

Also, my K805 Ocean Swirl arrived to match my fountain pen. It's so pretty! What more could I possibly need?

Super jazzed to have taken the leap. My first modern Pelikan. The nib is all everyone says.

Nice one! If you need to tame the wet nib a bit maybe you should consider using a drier ink such as Pelikan BB, Lamy BB, MB Midnight Blue or Diamine Prussian Blue.

I wonder if the Edelstein Moonstone gray ink is specifically designed to complement the Stresemann color scheme? The silver, black, and gray pinstripes really look great together.

I've been watching you match the pens with the corresponding ballpoints...nice!

With my last acquisition (a M605 Stresseman) I reached a total number of 138 Pelikan (but I am still not sure to have counted all of them), so as I am thinking to stop at least for 2020 to buy others. We will see if this will happen :D

Thanks! I really only need a couple, but I went a little over board on my EDC set project. Tracking down and completing a set is weirdly satisfying, like I'm buying my pens friends or something.

Yes. I think I'll be looking for some drier inks, especially for absorbent paper. So far I only have Pelikan black. In the mean time, I'm thinking about trying R&K Scabiosa.

Out soon I see. This could be an interesting pairing. I have few gray inks...

Pelikan 4001 should be dry enough for your pen. The other suggestions were for BB inks. R&K Salix and Scabiosa are also nice dry inks.

wanted to edit my previous post to add the photo of the 605 Stresemann but too late...

I'll just add it here

Very nice pen, nicely fine but wet F nib, it's in rotation now (ink on the nib...)

Just a day after and my plan has already failed. Today I was at a flea market (very early in the morning to avoid the crowd and mitigate the Corona virus risk) and found a gray marbled Pelikan 100 pencil possibly produced in the Milan factory. It is in very very good condition.

Vintage doesn't count, eh? I'll tell Cathy you said that the next time I head over to eBay

And for the newer FPN users, here's a picture from a few years ago, but remember, a lot of these "don't count"

fpn_1502987368__pelikan_tortoises.jpg

Wow, what a glorious set of beautiful pens! You have excellent taste, and have built a fine collection

That said, its exceptional harmony and balance is clearly marred by the inclusion of one that doesn’t quite ‘belong’ with the others... :(

I am of course referring to the ‘un-necessarily outsized’ and ‘unwieldy’ larger pen on the far right of the photograph.

As a ‘favour’ to you I will, in the interests of restoring the harmony and ‘balance’ to your collection, be willing to relieve you of that ‘disruptive’ 2013 M800 and to take up the ‘burden’of having to house it myself ;)

[‘Envious’? Moi? :D ]

I have only just acquired my first Souverän - an all-black M805, with a bi-coloured nib in ‘F’.

And its hand-feel & writing-sensation are so lovely that I am now rueing my decision to not go without food in order to buy a Brown Tortoise in 2013 :D

Yay, my K800 West German Green and Black finally showed up! I've got a matching green and black Pelikan three pen case on order so soon they'll have a home to live in. :)

fpn_1583972379__pelikan_800_green_and_bl

Sad that the gold trim and black engraved logo haven't worn evenly, but they still work really well.

fpn_1583972780__800_green_set.jpeg

So, that brings me up to a matching set for everyday of the week, plus a couple slightly mismatched Sheaffer Preludes. I'm calling this goal done as soon as that extra case arrives.
