Time to start cleaning pens so I can ink up all the birds for a family portrait!

Congrats! I’m looking forward to your pic!

This week a beautiful bird came home to roost, chased for a long time and finally meeting its new friends. Pelikan 101N Lizard, crown black.

Esta semana um lindo pássaro voltou para casa, foi perseguido por um longo tempo e finalmente conheceu seus novos amigos. Lagarto Pelikan 101N, coroa preta.

I confess that I was intrigued by the variation in the lizard pattern between the two pens. The color also draws attention, because examining the set there are no signs of tanning. If any of my esteemed colleagues have any information regarding this variation, I would be grateful to know, as I was unable to establish a reference that cites any standard variation in the 100N Lizard. Regards.

To further narrow down the date of manufacture, the pens would have been made after 1949; after 1949, the 100N no longer had a step on the grip.

Pelikan 100N (ca.1942)

Pelikan 101N (ca.1949)

Compare the grips of the two pens above.

However, the 101N on the left side has a D.R.P. (Deutsches Reichspatent) stamp on the cap and ebonite on the turning knob, so prewar parts may have been used.

Hi Tacitus, thank you for your support in better positioning the pen regarding the manufacturing period. Your website is always a great reference source. I'm still looking for some information about the variations in the Lizard pattern. This crown black version is very beautiful, it served as the basis for the new edition of the M series. Later I will post photos of the lid logo and the section.

Tacitus, when did they make the change from the lizard cap top to the black(?ebonite) cap top?  Thanks.

Hello, @Carrau. I think both  cap tops were produced at the same time, but I don't know the details.

Decisions, decisions -

I have four Pelikans to ink up, or will have by day's end. Might not do the actual filling until tomorrow.  Last week when I got the shipping notification for my Orange Delight I had every intention of cleaning out some pens over the weekend so that I can ink up all the birds at once - that'll be six Pelikans in total. However, I have what is, for me, an excessive number of pens already inked, so I have to make some hard decisions today: namely, which pens currently in rotation are coming out. I know the choice is ultimately my own, but I thought I'd crowd-source some alternatives.

So, hive mind, what do you think?

Inked birds

  • M205 B, Edelstein Moonstone
  • M800 M, Monteverde Olivine

TBI birds

  • M205 Apatite EF, Edelstein Apatite (already here, I keep trying to write out a blue-inked pen before I ink this one)
  • M200 Orange Delight B, Edelstein Mandarine
  • Two 120 with who-knows nibs, which I'll load with haven't-decided inks; inking either or both of these is very much optional, though I do like them both.

Ideally I'm cleaning four (maybe five) of these pens, none of which are birds

  • Levenger F, Robert Oster Aussie Gold << Probably cleaning this Cleaned
  • Lamy B, Lamy Dark Lilac
  • Monteverde Innova B, MV Viva Magenta << Cleaning this Cleaned
  • Levenger M, Diamine Polar Glow (this ink is the sh*t and while I would normally be happy to take a Levenger out of rotation I don't want to waste the ink!)
  • Majohn P136 stub, FPR Cosmic Pink << just refuses to be written out, may clean it anyhow Cleaned
  • Monteverde omniflex, Diamine Silver Fox
  • Sailor 1911L H-M, Diamine Red Dragon
  • TWSBI ECO EF, Noodler's Stockyard Signature (waaaay too much ink in this to consider dumping)
  • Preppy EF/02, Noodler's Sequoia (again, too much ink in it)
  • Pilot Petit, OEM blue cartridge << another endless ink supply
  • Moonman EF, Diamine Damson << this is my crossword pen AND is nearly full
  • Kaweco BB, Akkerman Oost-Indigo #09 << cleaning, I think Not cleaned.
  • Platinum MS, Iroshizuku ku-jaku << only a dab of ink left, should clean Cleaned

I like the idea of your “who-knows nibs”.  You could ride that theme and grab two bottles of ink without looking at the labels, fill the pens and then relish the surprise.  Who-knows pens filled with who-knows ink!*

* Absolutely no “who-knows” paper, though.  That would be irresponsible.😏

But "who knows" is the name I was planning to use for my Etsy shop!

The nibs are who-knows because the items are in a drawer and I was too invested in my chair and coffee to go look. But wait, the spreadsheet says... One is an EF, one is a F. Mystery solved!

I have chosen ink+pen pairings in the past by using a random number generator. Unless it's just a horrid prospect like a super-dry or extremely pale ink and a stingy pen with  EF nib I'll run with it.

Just spotted on Endless Pens - m1000 on sale for $800, doubledrop knocks off another 20%, brings the price down to about $645. Pre-order so be patient.

Olá,@Carrau. Acho que os dois bonés foram produzidos ao mesmo tempo, mas não sei os detalhes.

Tacitus and Carrau, I believe that the copies I have were produced in different periods. The section on the left is from the Crown Black pen and the right from the complete Lizard, there is a difference in the lip of the section, where the cap seals with the body. The observations I have made, but cannot be taken as consistent, because the sample of these pens is small, is that the Crown black ones were initial productions, until the war period. But I haven't found anything to confirm this information yet. I will continue looking for information to understand the chronology of these pens.
Best Regards

That’s seems like rather a fun idea!  I may try that myself.

I wonder if in the years after WW2, they had to make do with what they had on hand, and may have had to substitute components left over from other periods.  ( MB certainly did that even into the 1990s).  They would have been making them to be sold and used, not necessarily to be collected at that time.  There was no internet to compare models, one with another.  One would only see what was in the shop or what a friend was using, so opportunities for comparisons would be limited.  It’s always interesting.
