A Touch Of Copper

Started with a 1/2" round bar of solid copper,, metal lathe, some kitless tools and came up with this creation. I call it a Touch of Copper. Hope you like it! Doc😊

Thank you! Yes, the top and sides of nib with copperplared. The inferior surface of the nib touching the feed was left as polished steel so as not to affect surface tension and inflow

affect the surface tension anduuink flow.

So it's more a copper wash with a solution then? Or did you Wood's nickel strike the whole nib and mask off the feed side before plating?

I masked off the the underside of the nib with a paint that peels off. I use a rectifier/plater for plating.

Cool! I've been thinking of trying my hand at plating nibs. Do you plate the copper directly onto the steel? I've heard that that can be problematic, but the Wood's nickel strike simultaneously dissolves the oxide layer from the stainless steel and deposits a layer of nickel that can be more easily plated onto.

Thank you. I have to brush plate with Woods Nickel Strike prior on areas where I intend to plate with copper. Have to brush carefully to get into engraved areas of nib. It doesnt seem to leave very much of nickel finish and the copper plate seems shinier that when I used to used regular nickel plating solutions. Copper plate directly on an polished steel nib looks bad within two weeks of use. Learned the hard way.

Thats what happen when you use an iphone, place pen on a white sheet of paper under fluorescent lighting in a workshop. I usually use a Nikon w/macro lens and light box which has been stowed due to house makeover.

Oh, and follow up question. Did you plate a steel clip or make one out of copper?
