I am happy to add to my collection an octagonal safety filler.

 

This No. 2 dates back to the mid-1920s. It has an interesting J imprint on the barrel which means it was made to house the rare J calligraphic flexible nib. I am not lucky enough to have the J nib on my pen, but maybe someday I will find one The octagonal corners are nice and crisp. The pen is a good size for me, I dont much care for large pens. The nib is flexible when pressed against my fingernails. I will need to change the cork when I have some time, and I will be able to ink the pen only after that. I love the large MB stars on these old safeties! There is a pin inside the cap which ensures that if the user forgets to pull the nib into the barrel before capping the pen then the pin will push the nib in first - preventing any damage that might have been caused to the nib by being pushed against the inner top of the cap. The hard rubber material on this pen has very light oxidisation but I dont intend on re-blackening it using dyes or de-oxidizing chemicals (though I have managed to do this on other pens when required). I quite like the patina on this one. There are many hairline cracks on the cap star but I wouldnt expect otherwise from a 100-year old pen! In fact, I appreciate the character it adds.

It seems the J nib is a super flexible nib used for calligraphy. It had a horizontal J imprinted on the nib. Rather rare.

UPDATE - 10th Feb 2019

 

Today I am pleased to share with you a pen that has long been in my possession but has only just been resurrected! It is a lovely war time 232. To me, the flat tops were the most sophisticated design MB very made. I just love the 13x, 23x, and 33x series pens! My 232 is the smallest of the 23x range. Unlike the star outline on the cap crown of the 33x pens, the 23x series have the full casein star in their crown. This particular pen was manufactured during WWII - notice the steel nib and the absence of cap rings. The nib is a beautiful oblique double broad. It is one of the best nibs in my collection! You will notice a small chip at the side of the nib. It seems many vintage pens have this chip, and one of our FPN members explained that it might be due to the regular use of a ruler to draw lines. Rather interesting scar to have - I will be keeping it the way it is! This pen has the telescopic piston, my favourite! Now, the reason this 232 was sitting in my spare parts box for about a year is because its barrel isnt in great shape. However, recently I had the idea of making a transparent barrel to replace the damaged one and show off my favourite filing mechanism. I asked a famous Indian custom pen designer to make me the demo barrel, and voila!

New house, new set up. I don't have a fancy cabinet, but, I have a draw that allows me to take the pens out more often and keep them safer too.

Having sold all my modern MBs and other pens, I am proud of how small but significant (to me) this collection is turning out to be.
