The Lamy Unobtanium Ink (Petrol/dark Lilac) Crv

ErrantSmudge

Recommended Posts

I was fortunate to get a PIF from Amberlea, containing a sample of Lamy Petrol and Dark Lilac. Both are "unobtanium" inks, limited editions which sold out soon after release.

For those who have never experienced these inks but would like to search for alternatives and doppelgangers, I invite you to take part in this project. Here's how it works:

1) You sign up by contacting me via PM with your mailing address. This CRV is open worldwide, I will pay postage to faraway lands. There is a limit of 12 participants.

2) You will get a letter from me containing the following:

  • Two CRV sheets written with Lamy Dark Lilac ink
  • Two CRV sheets written with Lamy Petrol ink

The CRV sheets will be written on Tomoe River paper.

3) Write/draw/doodle whatever on one Dark Lilac sheet, and one Petrol sheet. Send those back to me. Keep the others for your own creative research. (I am asking you to pay postage for the return mail, so keep that in mind if you live outside the United States).

4) I will scan and post all received CRVs to this thread.

Ready? Go!

Wow, it's hard to get volunteers.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Is this still open? If so, I'd love to participate - certainly sounds interesting, and so do the colours.

Wow, it's hard to get volunteers.

Yes, I am surprised how little interest there is in this CRV!

A total of three people responded, including NotAWiz4rd and goodpens.

I just prepared the CRV samples today, and I'll be sending them out in the mail soon, likely on Friday.

This call for CRVs is closed.

Any CRVs I receive back will appear here in this thread!

Thanks to everyone who contacted me.

goodpens also provided me with a writing sample of Diamine November Rain, which is in the same ballpark, so I made a mini-CRV.

I am ashamed to have not noticed this before today. I would have loved to participate. Anyway, thank you all for posting this.

I have Lamy Petrol and find it in everyway to be substandard. My "doppelgangers" are Sailor Yama dori (a bit bluer) and Pilot Iroshizuku Shin-ryoku (not as dark).

Sorry I missed this as I think I have a couple of inks that might really be a good match for Lamy Petrol, I was thinking specifically of the IG Aristotle

The CRVs from EBGBs came in. Not only did he try some ink mixes to replicate the Lamy colors, he also sent me back some more CRVs of his own for me to complete!

First, the teals.

Lamy Petrol vs. Iroshizuku Syo-Ro, Organics Studios Uranium, Robert Oster Deep Sea, Diamine Musician Beethoven, Diamine Musician Schubert, and some mixes of Iroshizuku Syo-Ro and Iroshizuku Take-Sumi,

fpn_1547250614__lamy_petrol_crv_ebgb_1.j

Lamy Petrol vs. the "Iro Petrol" mix: 2.5 of Iroshizuku Syo-Ro to 1 of Iroshizuku Take-Sumi. Tomoe River.

Lamy Petrol vs. the "Iro Petrol" mix, Rhodia paper.

And the purples:

Lamy Dark Lilac versus Iroshizuku Yama-Budo, Monteverde Garnet, Noodler's Eel Cactus Fruit, Diamine Bilberry, Monteverde Amethyst, and two mixes: Iroshizuku Yama-Budo + Asa-Gao 3:1 ("Iro Lilac"), and Monteverde Garnet + Amethyst 1:1 ("Monte Lilac").

Lamy Dark Lilac versus three mixes: Monte Lilac, Iro Lilac, and Faux Dark Lilac #3 (Noodler's Purple + DeAtrementis Aubergine 2:1).

Hi!

Whenever Kaweco publishes limited inks, I buy five boxes of cartridges and an inkwell, I know I have ink for centuries but my peace of mind is superior to knowing I have something I can't buy at a later date.

I love petrol ink and dark lilac is spectacular.

Greetings

This is surely a good strategy, assuming you can get the ink in the first place. By the time I had heard of Dark Lilac, it was already long sold out.

Thank you, ErrantSmudge, for the opportunity to do these. I must admit that while the samples I provided versus Lamy Petrol were not close in color, they were much nicer to write with. I am not a huge fan of the Lamy Petrol ink. And since I did not get a chance to try Lamy Dark Lilac (my mistake - I didn't buy it when I first saw it), I can say that I like the color and would have enjoyed giving it a try. But I do really like Rohrer & Klinger's Aubergine. When the weather warms up I would like to order another bottle.

I am really impressed, however, with EBGB's mix of Pilot Iro. Yama-Budo and Asa-Gao. I may just have do some playing around myself.
