A Nice Example Of A Much Underrated Conway Stewart

I just thought it might be nice to share this pen with you, a 286 which when they appear in the simple black finish do seem to be very underrated. I have handled a few CS 286s over the years, but never come across one quite as nice as this one, and also never seen one with this chasing before. Judging by the clip and imprint underlined with a line of dots, this is not the earliest, but certainly an early incarnation, possibly mid 1930's? It has some minor plate loss, but apart from that and some fine scratches from the cap, it has certainly survived the years better than I have!

Beautiful - love the chasing! How does it write? Looks like a juicy nib?

I chose my user name years ago - I have no links to BBS pens (other than owning one!)

Hi,

It's a very smooth writer, and makes my handwriting look half-decent, not as flexible as I'd have thought, nevertheless, a very nice nib

great and lovely looking pen - that black is almost brand new and I'm a big fan of black. I'd have thought it might write thicker than it does - possibly just a heavy looking medium maybe., I struggle with many C.S. nibs - the ones that do come my way are mostly nails.

It probably is more of a 'heavy' medium. It does have more flex to it, as you can see from the new sample, but it needs more pressure than say a nice flexi Swan nib, and so might become a little tiresome after a while ...

That looks like fun to write with!

And in reference to the cricket, it's not over yet! (Can't wait to see Graeme Swann on Strictly, too ...)
