10 New Lamy Inks At The End Of The Year!

Will do a review (at least an attempt) when I have had a bit of play......

For those that asked I got the ink from penandpaper.co.uk and paid the list price of £9.50 but bought enough to get the free shipping, which can be costly for us in the far north.......

Although afterwards I was trying to work out what I could add to colour champagne as this would be much cheaper to use as an ink :yikes:

Look forward to your review when you get time.

I purchased a bottle of Lamy Obsidian a week ago at Appelboom. Inked a Platinum #3776 with medium nib half an hour ago and did some testing. I do not now how to review an ink, but I can give my initial impression here.

The ink flows well, I see no difference with other inks like Diamine Saphire Blue or Iroshizuko Asa Gao. But that may be the pen (feed), not the ink. However, compared to the Noodler's Eel Blue I had in this pen before the Obsidian, the nib has a little more friction on the paper. As some has said before, a Platinum nib is not super-smooth, but more like a well-worn pencil on paper. Obsidian gives a little more of this pencil-like feedback.

Colour is matte black, no shading, on either Rhodia or plain paper, but not as intense black as I hoped it would be. Little feathering on plain paper, none on Rhodia. No bleed-through on either of the papers.

[ correction: I had another look today at daylight, and it seems that the colour is more like a very dark black-brown]

The bottle looks nice, wide opening, but I assume filling a pen will get more and more difficult as ink gets used up, because even a full bottle has only about 28 mm of 'filling depth'.

I paid €9.90 for a 30 ml bottle.

Little do any of you know, Lamy is also going to out-Lamy themselves and only make ten bottles of each color.

GOOD LUCK.

I just got a bottle of petrol from driften as a PIF (which is insane, they're selling for almost $50 a bottle on ebay) and I have no idea why Lamy didn't just make it a standard color or offer it all year like an edelstein IOTY (Please pelikan, make smoky quartz permanent. I hoarded 3 bottles just in case) it's lovely and a nice everyday color.

Lamy has one of the top five best bottle designs too. Where else can an ink bottle pull double duty as a dreidel?

But their colors are just... suck. I like turquoise and petrol and that's it. But a lamy bottle filled with pilot blue/black from a 350mL pilot bottle sees more use than any other bottle in my collection.

Well applebloom's shipping ain't cheap, but with the "Friend" code giving me a 10% discount and the 10 bottle discount of over a buck a bottle, I ordered all 10 colors.

I went looking for some inks on Appelboom, and balked at the shipping price (I think it was over 25 Euro for a couple of bottles?!). I then surfed over to La Couronne du Comte, who have a 20% off deal for Fountain Pen Day / weekend - and only charged me 15 Euro for shipping (less if I'm prepared to go untracked). I don't know why the shipping costs vary so greatly from two stores in the same country (the Netherlands) - but was glad to get a good deal!

Partly what deal they can get with courier/postal services and partly what pricing they can charge customers.

I too prefer LCdC.

Which inks did you get?

In the end only a couple - Diamine Blue Lightning (from their Shimmertastic range), and Krishna Jungle Volcano (though the latter is out of stock). Plus a few other little bits and pieces. I was tempted to get another bottle of ink (it wouldn't have changed the postage charge), but couldn't justify spending more at the moment... Still cheaper than trying to source them in Australia, though!

The Jungle Volcano is quirky. I have not tried any Shimmertatstic inks, yet.

Definitely cheaper than prices down under, provided you plan a 'bundle' buy. :D

I'll post some swabs and alternate with my new set of 12 hero colors, but I got all 10 colors in yesterday and inked 5 pens up thusfar - Azurite (royal blue/purple) Agate (grey) Ruby (red) Beryl (magenta) and amazonite (turquoise)

I haven't done the green, black, brown, blue/grey or pink yet. But all 5 I have inked are freaking home runs. Every one of them is in the top three now in its color. The Agate, is the grey ink I've been begging for from everyone. it's warm, summer rain hued with monster shading. Not a cold steel grey. It's perfection. The Beryl in a noodlers konrad is a sheen monster, it'll trade punches with yama-budo all day. I can't say much for azurite yet, I was dumb and inked a pilot vanishing point F nib. So it just seems like a lovely shade of purple. It did dry near-instantly on tomoe river though. Amazonite doesn't seem to have a ton of sheen, but it does shade, there seems to be hints of red sheen in a medium-dry medium nib pelikan. It's a very deep turquoise. not hyper saturated but a very rich color. And the ruby is one of my favorite reds of all time now. it's darker, not super vibrant, but in a wet F nib, it's still a rich red with a lot of shading.

Right now agate, the grey, is stampeding into my top 5 inks.

Thanks for the quick update. Look forward to the detailed write up/swabs.

First impressions seem to be very promising.

I too like Grey and will get one, if it is a described. Same for the Beryl.

Did you get the Benitoite?

haven't inked it up yet but yes, I bought one of every color.

If I can find a US source for agate, I'm going to buy four or five more bottles.

I have the Peridot. Ordered from lacouronneducomte for 9.50.

Loving the dark green, and it writes very well in my TWSBI eco.

The bottle is slightlt triangular in shape. Love how it looks. And couldn't help myself and ordered 4 more colors

10 minutes of writing with Agate in a Pilot custom 823, FA nib and flexible nib factory ebonite feed.

The t53 bottle is nicely made, nicely designed, but shallow. Only a #5 nib will properly fill from it, everything else required the bottle be tilted. But the caps are super nice and smooth, and the mouth is wide enough that the bottle works fine when tilted.

I am warming up to three inks so far, unless the swabs throw up a hidden gem. ;)

Benitotite is less impressive than I imagined. it's currently the weakest in the lineup (the pink can have absolutely outlandish gold sheen). It's kind of a mix between a fog grey and pilot blue black. No real sheen, not a lot of shading. It's well behaved, but in the two pens I've inked with it thusfar, it just feels a little plain.

Right now the big winners are agate, amazonite, and ruby. I have yet to try obsidian (which I don't expect to blow my socks off. it's black. topaz (brown) and peridot (green))

Water resistance of Benitoite since it is described as 'document proof'?

Are you referring to Ruby as 'pink' with the gold sheen?

I am still undecided on the Amazonite.
