Montegrappa Extra Otto Butterfly Blue

So I was trawling through instagram the other day and I happened to come across a post by Casa della Stilografica announcing a new limited edition Montegrappa Extra Otto. This one is called butterfly blue, behold the beauty:

I for one, will be pre ordering one of these pens as it reminds me of the OMAS Saffron Blue, one of my favourite celluloids. As usual it will be a limited edition of 888 and available in F,M,B nib sizes only. The suggested retail price is 1,495 euros but it can obviously be had for less than that. Is anyone else keen on these?

If I am not mistaken, that celluloid was used in a Montegrappa pen made exclusively for the American market, called "Liberty Lapis." As of this moment, there are a few still available and with nibs broad enough to interest some who favor stubs and broad obliques, etc.

Oh ... And they are on sale. There's this pen shop in Little Rock with which I have no affiliation.

FWIW, I have this pen and its "Indian Summer" sibling too, both with factory stubs. They are smooth and sufficiently crisp. Perfect writers out of the box in both cases.

Thanks for the info, you may well be right as the celluloid looks pretty similar. Personally I can’t go past a faceted extra at a slightly less insane price than the previous Otto’s were.

I checked the link provided in the OP. In fact, this material is called "Lapis." There is another new release from Montegrappa in a very blue material they called "Butterfly Blue."

You may be right, though I see on another site the inverse description of the two patterns. Whatever the case both look great.

The photograph of the material, whatever "Lapis" it might be is one of the most beautiful celluloids I have seen; I especially like the appearance of the material in the faceted pen, somehow it seems to give an extra dimension to the pattern in the celluloid.

I have an older Visconti, Ponte Vecchio, in Pompei celluloid, which was the first instance I had seen of using a "wrapped" celluloid, which has similar colors to this pen. The combination of the vibrant blue with splashes of terra cotta or orange yields a pleasing effect.

Cant go past the use of complimentary colours, especially in a swirly organic form like this celluloid.

Confirming that the colour of the Extra Otto pictured is Lapis, with the butterfly blue Extra Otto the exact same material to the recently released US only Extra Butterfly edition. In a faceted pen it looks even better.

Ive just pre-ordered my Lapis Extra Otto, so the long wait begins. Heaps of new Extras being released later this year and Im glad that Montegrappa is finally focussing some of their efforts on one of their more tasteful models. Well played!

Just for completeness I thought I'd share a few snaps of my Extra Otto in Lapis Blue (yep, not butterfly blue as first thought). Another beautiful celluloid from Montegrappa with the orange section translucent, sparkling in the light. The cap on mine has a large section of orange on one side which gives a nice bit of variation depending on the side of pen you are looking at. I've included some close ups for you in natural light. Enjoy the pics.

With all the respect and the love for Omas and its unforgettable Paragon, in any of its declensions, your last pic of the Extra Otto Lapis and the Paragon Saffron side by side is a great praise to the genius of Montegrappa.

The larger width of the Extra, the refined statement of that cap ring, the contemporary and classic clip (one of the best clips around, in my opinion), and the light of the celluloid, anything speaks of a contemporary pen of comparable rank – to say the least - to a great and timeless classic.
