Homage To Homer Thread

The Trojan horse isn't in the Iliad - it is told, in small snippets, in the Odyssey. But the last line of the Iliad is something like "Thus was the funeral of Hector, tamer of horses" - I like to imagine that's the reference (but of course it isn't). Most people just associate Homer with the Trojan war, and the war with the horse.

It was a cheap one I bought on eBay about five years ago. I’ve done a quick search and I can’t find any similar ones today.

As you’re in the UK I would strongly recommend TheNorthumbrianPenCo for cases - their own branded ones are spectacularly good. No,affiliation, but I discovered them at a pen show and now they’re all I use. They have a single wider and very high quality elastic band per pen (much better) and everything is double stitched. Really plush cases with lovely suede dividers etc. Anyway, as I say no affiliation but they’re the best I’ve ever used.

PS I ordered and paid for my Homer this morning, based on the photos in this thread. Got a decent discount and will be with me 2 days after the AD gets them in. He’s already had the RB & BP but not had the FP yet, strangely.

Might have also accidentally ordered the Spider Metamorphosis too :-)

Now just 4 more pens to go and i’ll Have completed the WE set... eeeeeek (all you guys fault!)

Just own the pen barely less than a week. I have scratches on the the hugh gloss section. I highly suspect the culprit is metal screw threads in the cap. My heart is so pain now as this is my first WE... Now I have to close the pen very carefully and ensure the threads are touching before turn to close it...

Accurate references to the pen's namesake tends to be MB's (ahem!) Achilles heel. Remember what they did to Gandhi?

I was able to see them at the MB boutique and it doesn't change my choice to not buy them. I still don't like the horse head and I find the black resin of the body and cap cheap. The limited model is really nice (I wasn't able to see the nib because the pen was sealed) but found the coral resin cheap too but I understand people like it as it is a #9 nib and a body based on a 149 size.

OMG

They put his mendicant image and spun thread on that luxury pen?

The second batch of the Homer came to the boutique today, so I decided to keep one for M and the other for OB. This will be my first 149 nib size in OB. By the way the staff said everyone can buy the Homer ink whether buy the pen or not.

Thank you for confirming that the Montblanc Homer Greek Blue ink will be generally available for purchase.

It's a hue which especially attracts me.

I hope that the OB nib will be satisfactory for your writing needs.

Such a nib produces expressive strokes, which is pleasing when writing personal correspondence to others.

A little photo of the Homer Greek blue ink packaging:

I don't have some writing sample with the ink because I don't have free FP to test it at the moment :) When the Snake will be empty I will ink it with the Homer.

Thank you for this image of the Homer Greek Blue ink.

The more that I see it, the more that I like it.

Your clear and vibrant image brings out its color.

Whenever Montblanc China has it in stock, I'm sure to order it.

I can vouch for these cases too - excellent quality at an extremely reasonable price. The slots may look as though they can't take a large pen, but my Charles Dickens is snuggled in.

Belated thanks to Brandon for posting such excellent pictures of this pen. I think I will have to get to a boutique to see it, and probably get a bottle of the ink, it looks like a different, useable blue.

I chose my user name years ago - I have no links to BBS pens (other than owning one!)

Kudos to you for explaining such a subtle distinction.

It's Virgil's Aeneid which best tells the tale.

Your graceful mention of the “tamer of horses” is a joy to read.

Thank you so much for this lovely comment in connection with the 2018 WE Homage to Homer pens.

At first I just planned to buy a OB, but I really appreciate the Homer, I decided added a M for a practical purpose. Fortunately the Homer M performances even better than my other 149 Ms. I also bought more than one in Hemingway, Agatha,, Schiller, kafka, Cervantes, Mann, Mark Twain in WE.

I didn’t realise it was gloss, this happens on the 1912 but it polished off quite easily. If the finish is matte however, you might not want to polish it as it might change the look of the pen.

I saw the pen in person at the SF boutique on Monday.

The pluses:

+ 149 size nib

+ cap _AND_ body designed by same person (unlike other previous writer editions that seemed schizophrenic or at least horribly mismatched] I think the cap design is the most attractive part of the pen, love the Greek key and other metal work on it

+ While there is a large step to the section and the pen is very bulbous there is a flatish area on body (I suppose the belly of horse?) and your thumb can rest there comfortably

+ The resin has a cool tactile feel and is not slippery... it's noticable different from "precious resin" of the 149

+ The "spear" clip made me think Parker, but it looks good on this pen

The minuses (all are subjective, and purely my opinion)

- The resin feels cheap and weird to me. I don't like the fiberglass / resin feel. I really like my celluloid, hard rubber, and urushi pens, but I know someone people don't like how those feel those, so this might be appealing to them

- IMO The body is just so very ugly... while I see the horse head on the cap, the pen body with the various lines just looks so ugggh.. I hope MB doesn't start designing its pen bodies to look like action figures or other animals... maybe it's for the younger crowd.

Thank you for your review, comments and images.

It helps to have the positive and not-so-positive points clearly laid out.

Your analysis is helpful to my understanding of this model.

I especially appreciate the images.

I held one for the first time yesterday... I liked it! It's big, 149 nib, 149 section, lightweight, caps and uncaps nicely, love the patterns, the MB star...

So I bought one. OB. It shall arrive in a week or two I think. I'm quite excited!!
