hmj: I agree with your image of the triangle that, to me, is maroon (dark brownish-red). Dark purple reds (like dry red wines), to me, are not maroon, but in a category by themselves. Not sure what other people call that, but I've always called those colors "burgundy" out of convenience.

I can only add a few options that I don't think have been mentioned:

Sailor Grenade

Krishna Granade

In the hard to impossible to find are classics like Montblanc Alfred Hitchcock and Levenger Pomegranate.

Best of luck, and share some images of what you decide on with us!

I didn't mention Levenger Pomegranate because it is virtually impossible to find. The Red Cashmere fits the color range as well. But same thing.

Great points about definition of the word. For reference, below is the color I'm looking for. For Texas natives, it's close to an Aggie-maroon.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I love Red Dragon, but I don't think it is dark enough.

As far as I know, yes. There were some concerns about what might happen after the original person who started the company died in 2013. But they continue to make periodic posts on Facebook, so I believe that they're still in business. From the website, it looks like their home base is located only a few miles from me in Zionsville, Indiana, so I may have to take a look myself... ;)

And Diamine Red Rose which is a dead ringer for Hitchcock.

I don't see Red Rose on their site. Is it Burgundy Rose, or is that a different ink?

Thanks!

greg

Don't feel bad. I'm old; I'm meh about most things.

I think J Herbin Poussiere de Lune won't match. I have the new formula and,to me, leans pink ish side of maroon.

Sailor Oku-Yama or BungBox Tears of a clown, maybe Noodlers Black Swan in Australian Roses.

I was confused by that as well & actually had to look thru my Flower set to determine that there was only one "rose" ink & it was the Burgundy Rose.

Favorite dark maroon ink as well as my favorite ink: Noodler's Red Black.

Always inked, well-behaved, good shading, partially waterproof, gorgeous color, dark enough for everyday but never boring. It leans away from the more cloying pink/purple towards a more subtle and adult mahogany. It's never been a problem as to maintenance. I've had it in my Pelikan for years. And before that, my platinum 3776's.

Ah ha! Aggie maroon I can recognize. Matches quite closely to my writing samples of Diamine Oxblood - if you need a third option I'd recommend it. No sheen or crazy characteristics but safe and results in nice dark lines out of every pen I've used it in.

I have a pen inked with oxblood right now, and yep, to my eye matches pretty well.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions so far!

Diamine Oxblood appears to be the most recommended ink. It is a good match for "dark maroon" and I agree with several people that Diamine ink is a great all-around value. I think I will get a bottle of Oxblood. (Although, I wish that I could easily get my hands on the Cult Pen's Deep Dark Red that Amberlea posted. It looks like an almost perfect match.)

Sailor Oku-Yama appears to be another popular recommendation and a great match. I want to try that one, also.

And, I'm looking to get an ink sample (at the very least) of KWZ Maroon #1.

I'll try and post comparisons once I get the inks.

For your reference, here are a handful of my ink swatches that are somewhat close to the right color range. The scanner made Oxblood look brighter than it actually is, but it does at least reflect the difference in hue; Oxblood has more of the brownish-orange undertone than Oku-Yama or Kounan Maroon, both of which have comparatively purple undertones. I don't think I have the other inks mentioned, though.

KWZI LG red darkens gradually to a very pleasing dark red, although it's possible that it doesn't quite hit the colour balance that you're seeking...

I love this ink. It is one of the ones that I have only tried in samples. I keep meaning to purchase it.
