Dark Maroon Ink Recommendations

hmj

Recommended Posts

The ink comparison tools on popular vendors' websites do not have maroon as a color family option. And a basic online search shows very few options with the word 'maroon' in the ink name. Also, I read reviews that some of those may not even be true maroons (i.e. Diamine Maroon and Noodler's Mandalay Maroon). Robert Oster Maroon 1789 looks promising, but I wanted to see if anyone knew of others that may be good, too.

Do you have any dark maroon fountain pen ink recommendations? Thanks.

Truth be told, in my native language there's no concept of "maroon", so I've never known what exactly a maroon colour should be.

Some inks with the name maroon that I've tried and loved:

KWZI Maroon #2 (They should have a #1 too but I've never tried that one.

And if you can find it:

Sailor Kobe #27 Konan Maroon. It's a gorgeous colour with sheen.

Depends on how "purple" you like your maroon, but if Diamine Maroon didn't do it for you. Diamine Oxblood (dark red) or Syrah (dark wine colored) are good places to start. Noodler's has some great options as you've pointed out. Maroon is a difficult color to define - honestly it's about what you're looking for.

In general I start with Diamine to find a color shade I'm looking for: they have so many and most of their ink behaves well...

Great points about definition of the word. For reference, below is the color I'm looking for. For Texas natives, it's close to an Aggie-maroon.

I'm liking both of these suggestions!

Ah ha! Aggie maroon I can recognize. Matches quite closely to my writing samples of Diamine Oxblood - if you need a third option I'd recommend it. No sheen or crazy characteristics but safe and results in nice dark lines out of every pen I've used it in.

Now that looks close to what I feel is a maroon colour.

One option I like is Franklin Christoph Sweet Maroon - though it might be slightly redder than you'd prefer - check the ink section here for reviews.

I use KWZ standard Maroon (#1), it's a nice, very dark red without, to my eye, the brownish tone usually associated with maroon.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

Take a look J Herbin Poussiere de Lune. Once upon a time it was a purple, but it was reformulated and is now maroon. How dark it is will depend on the pen. In my Parker Victory, it is almost black.

Sailor Oku-Yama and Grenat (close if not the same ink), and Papier Plume Red Beans and Rice are a few others to consider.

My vote is for Diamine Syrah with a juicy nib. That ink is fantastic and a good value.

These are the ones in your color family that I have used and like:

L'Artisan Pastelier Callifolio Grenat

Montblanc Burgundy Red

I have not tried this, but DeAtramentis Marone may be what you are looking for (https://vanness1938.com/collections/deatramentis-standard-inks/maroon-ink)

Also be sure to look at DeAtramentis "wine" colors. ( Some of the US retailers carry some of them.

I love this one as well, so I'll second the suggestion! Or the similar Sailor Oku-Yama, which should be easier/cheaper to find than the Kobe ink, is a nice one as well.

Here's a couple of suggestions I got off the Goulet Swab Shop (I hope I'm not violating any rules by posting screen shots here 😓). The best part is, you can order samples to see which is closest to the color you want. 😊P.s.I hope the photo uploads correctly 😶

Another is Diamine Merlot.

hmj: I agree with your image of the triangle —that, to me, is maroon (dark brownish-red). Dark purple reds (like dry red wines), to me, are not maroon, but in a category by themselves. Not sure what other people call that, but I've always called those colors "burgundy" —out of convenience.

I can only add a few options that I don't think have been mentioned:

Sailor Grenade

Krishna Granade

In the hard to impossible to find are classics like Montblanc Alfred Hitchcock and Levenger Pomegranate.

Best of luck, and share some images of what you decide on with us!

And Diamine Red Rose which is a dead ringer for Hitchcock.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).
