Coating Peeling Off - Dialog 3

Where did you buy it from (country wise ?). For me I've used the online form and had quick replies, but this is with Europe.

I bought it in India itself. A Lamy outlet (small) in a Shopping Mall. India recently got William Penn as a Channel Partner for LAMY.

Your only option is to send the pen to Germany with a detailed explanation, unless you want to continue using it in it's present form.

They will probably return it to you in under 8 weeks.

If you travel abroad or have anyone traveling, they could post it for you.

I doubt anyone will entertain your request in India and definitely not past the warranty period.

Getting the pen past Indian customs when Lamy send it back, is a different matter. :wallbash: Considering the pen retails for Rs. 30K/$440 in India.

I am unsure if Lamy specify 'repairs or something to that effect' on the package for easy identification.

IIRC, William Penn is the only official retailer in India.

OTOH, Lamy are taking India more seriously though I am doubtful of their partner.

Will check with William Penn first. If they can help resolve this issue for me. The Dialog 3 is really very expensive and hence I don't want to shell out more money.

I shall write separately to William Penn. Let me write to them right away.

Are you still under the warranty period? You might want to get in touch with the retailer from whom you purchased.

OTOH, is that Lamy outlet an official or unofficial seller?

If unofficial, I doubt William Penn will play ball and Germany will be the only option.

I would take it to William Penn, if you have a store nearby.

  • 3 weeks later...

Guys,

An update. I have written to William Penn and have already shipped the Pen to them. They said they will look into it and let me soon.

Hope they are able to work it out.

I requested them if possible to replace it with a Palladium Finish one.

Great, hopefully they sort it out.

What time frame did they quote?

Roughly 30 - 40 Days. They received the Pen day before (20th August 2018) so calculating 40 Days from e receipt I assume it should be roughly around Mid September.

Doesn't matter much since its not a daily driver for me, the 2000 (SS) is. However its more piece of an Art + Engineering. It looks way way more awesome than any other Pen I have seen.

Glad the William Penn lead worked out. I was quite skeptical since you had not bought it from them.

Probably end of Sept. considering Indian pace of doing things. ;)

Touch base in 2 weeks, else you might find the pen has been misplaced at the bottom of the drawer. :D

Any idea if they are sending it to Lamy or sorting it locally?

Did they ask you for proof of purchase?

OTOH, did you procure the 2K SS in India too?

All the Lamy's are purchased in India.

The Palladium Dialog 3 has never shown these issues. Its just the Black One which has in the past also given issues.

As far as I know from the conversation with Service Rep they will try and identify the root cause of the issue and repair it. (I honestly do not have any idea how can you repair the coating since its come off clean)

I hope they provide a new body for the Black Dialog 3 else replace the whole pen itself with the Metal Finish.

But surely I wouldn't recommend anyone to go for the Black Dialog for sure.

I have also faced an issue with the Dialog 3 drying up extremely fast. (I have used Dry as well as Wet Inks) but the issue is serious.

Sorry to report this, but my Palladium Dialog 3 HAS shown this problem.

I've owned the pen from new for three years but inked it only once and have stored it carefully in a case, as I do all my pens, with no other problems seen.

When I inked it last week to show a colleague who was thinking of buying one I discovered this:

I chose my user name years ago - I have no links to BBS pens (other than owning one!)

Two unrelated Lamy Dialog with similar issues. :wallbash:

Are there any more with such QC issues?

What is the Dialog's body made of? I mean the material underneath the coating.

Brass or metal but I am not certain. The coating deterioration is unusual and alarming. :o

Uhm, brass is a metal. An alloy, to be precise.

That is correct, Cu+Zn.

I had meant brass or another metal/alloy, should have worded it differently.

I have seen this fairly often on the Dialog 3...... You can find many examples on Ebay. I will not call it a QC but probably a design flaw. It's just too often to be a QC issue and that's pretty much the only thing stopped me from getting a Dialog when they were on sale from Lamyusa.

I have the Palladium Finish one - They are discontinued in India though.

Can you try and clean it with Luke Warm water? I had seen similar one on mine but I gave it a good rub with water and MicroFibre. It was clean as far as I remember.

Also, if possible store the Palladium one in simple cloth and not Leather / Velvet case.

This is the second Dialog 3 where I am facing issues. I am still to hear from William Penn about my Dialog 3.

Somehow I am leaning more towards Namiki VP (The Black Matte One).

As for the Metal for Dialog I feel its not just SS as against the Lamy 2000 (SS). Superb finish on the Inside however the coating keeps coming off.

Guys,

Just received a Courier... William Penn has replaced the Dialog 3 entirely.

I am so glad and Happy about it.

Thank you all for your support!

Great news. I had hoped they would replace it.

Quick turnaround too. Lamy CS is fantastic.

Any reason for the problem?

this is why I will never purchase a matte black pen ever again. I had problems with the monteverde invincia. then its replacement. and now the black nib is flaking in the deluxe.

if the dialog 3 and vanishing point's can't manage to maintain a good matte black finish, nothing can.

Selling a boatload of restored, fairly rare, vintage Japanese gold nib pens, click here to see (more added as I finish restoring them)

They haven't provided any reason / root cause for the chipping / flaking.

I wrote to them and acknowledged their services.

Wrote a second mail inquiring about the warranty and all. However, their revert wasn't as forthcoming - they mentioned the original warranty stands! Disappointing since they replaced the entire Pen. I know its a new one since the original inner mechanism didn't have the Window to observe the amount of Ink left in the converter. This is probably the Second / Third generation.

Hence I was requesting the Palladium Finish since it develops minor spots which can be rubbed away with little Luke Warm water and Microfibre cloth.

I will keep this in its original case.

But what is your opinion - If the brand provides an entirely new writing instrument shouldn't there be renewed warranty?
