Pelikan Hubs 2018 !

The first one I went to was at a local Panera Bread (unfortunately we couldn't get the back room -- it was booked weeks in advance by some gamer group). The next one was at a different Panera, where we could get the back room, and last year's Pittsburgh Hub was in the meeting room of a local church where one of the Steel City Pen members is minister (at that one we had people come in all the way from Cleveland (!) where they didn't get enough people for a Hub).

Photos get taken (generally showing our birdies. I bring random silly stuff (like Skippy and Evil Twin Skippy, the two small Pelikan pen stands I own) to preside over things (they were joined the second year by the battery powered "mini Lucky Cat" (maneki-neko) I picked up at a local Barnes and Noble killing time before the Hub (wasn't sure how long it would take for me to get to where the Hub was that year because it was the beginning of rush hour). This year might also include the two Wade Whimsey pelicans (one white glazed, one brown glazed) I've picked up -- just because. Or it might be the the mini Gumby and Poky or the blue 1960s Rat Fink (if I can figure out where that ended up ) or even the ceramic Kliban cat ornament I picked up a couple of months ago at a moving sale....

We always get swag -- the first year it was tins of cartridges of Edelstein Amethyst, and the next two years it was bottles of the respective inks of the year (Aquamarine and then Smoky Quartz), oh and one year also very nice Pelikan notepads (wish I knew where those came from == the paper is VERY FP friendly). Last year the Hubmaster also got a complete set of the standard Edelstein colors which we could try. At the church, we brought snacks and drinks (I made marzipan oranges, IIRC -- this year, if it ends up being there again, I might make key lime pie.

Otherwise, it's the usual geeking about pens.... B) I'll check with Josh, the guy who maintains the SCN mailing list (and posts reminders about meetings on FPN) and see if he's signed up as Hubmaster again.

Just for comparison with our experience here in Detroit, could others please post what their experience was like in other cities last year? Where was your event held and what did you do?

In Montreal, it was a really nice evening: our hubmaster did a short presentation on the history of Pelikan and also brought in samples of various FP-friendly papers for us to try, including some Japanese ones that many of us had never had the opportunity of trying out (e.g., Tomoe River, Kokuyo). We had a full set of Edelstein inks to try (which was fun!), take small samples home (more fun with syringes and ink!) and we each received a bottle of that year's Edelstein ink of the year (Smoky Quartz).

That said, I'd highly recommend it just for the company: IMHO, it was a really positive environment where you knew you would find supportive, like-minded, fountain-pen friendly people to whom you don't need to explain why you use a FP in the 21st century and who you could trust to try writing with your FP correctly (i.e., not jabbing it into the paper, not railroading the nib from too much pressure, etc.) and vice versa.

Sounds great! Where did you hold the event?

The 2017 Montreal hub was held at the Ėcole de Design (UQAM) where we hope to hold other events tied to the pen/analog world.

BTW the Pelican Hub deadline has been extended to July 22, 2018 (according to a Pelian post on Instagram).

Montreal could certainly use a few more participants. ( https://www.pelikan.com/pulse/Pulsar/en_US_INTL.Hubs.displayApprovedHubs.252352.orderCaseInsensitive.false.orderDirection.ASCENDING.pgOffset.20.pgStart.0./index.html )

While 17 (current sign-up) is a nice number for a group, some folks won't show.

We should send you some of our Toronto participants... we are at 97 at the moment.

I was the hubmistress for last year, approx 68 registered participants, ended up being around 80+ people (guests included). Whoever organizes this one, will have "fun" looking for a venue. Not easy.

97? YIKES! The Pittsburgh ones tend to be more like 10-20.
Last year (at the church) we did a potluck. And the Hubmaster brought bottles of every color of Edelstein ink currently available for people to try.

I couldn't get our normal venue so I had to book something smaller. While I'd love a ton more people to register, I'm actually happy we're hovering in the 60s. Did you sign up as hub master this year?

Yes I did, but Pelikan likes to use new people every year, so chances are I won't get it. But that's fine, I got lucky last time.. It took me just a few phone calls to get the venue.

Well, I heard from the Pittsburgh Hubmaster this morning. He's in the process of looking for a location. Interestingly enough, there were several people in the list of people who were on the mailing list whose names I didn't recognize from the regular SCN list.

Hub master again this year for Montreal. So you're in Montreal, but you didn't sign up in time? That's okay! We can't supply you with a Pelikan prize, but you can still come and hang out. It'll be fun fun fun. Send me a PM and I will put you on the list.

Who's Hub Master for San Francisco, and San Jose? Do you know where you're going to have them? (I opted for Palo Alto which is a known location vs an unknown one for SF, and it's closer than SJC)

I'm hoping to be able to attend as a non-registered, non-swag recipient in DC.

I have sent an email to Pelikan asking to have my information passed along the the Washington DC hub master.

If I can attend, this will be my first hub. I thought I'd be out of town but I'll be here - so I missed the registration deadline. Gaaaah ! ! !
