Mechanical Pencil Eraser Refills -- Huge Range Of Sizes

Recommended Posts

The erasers mounted in mechanical pencils aren't the glorious part of the writing instrument. Certainly the lead takes center stage. But eraser width varies rather wildly from model to model and brand to brand. It seems that several "standards" were attempted here and there, but none really universally agreed upon. So... if the particular model of a mechanical pencil you have has been discontinued, it's possible the manufacturer might not even be making the eraser refill any longer.

I was searching for quite a while and very frustrated because many times eraser refills are sold only with a mechanical pencil model number or name... so you have no idea what is the eraser diameter. That's essential information if you're looking for compatibility.

Thankfully JetPens made the effort to include that information [LINK], so when browsing their eraser listings, click on "specifications" and most of the time you'll see the diameter info. Here's a list of some popular refills and their sizes:

Pentel PPE-2: 4.0mm
Pentel LCE-5: 4.1mm
Pentel Z2: 4.2mm
Pilot HERF: 4.5mm
Pilot HERFN: 4.6mm
Pilot HERFNS: 4.7mm
Pilot HERF-10BK: 7.5mm
Pilot MS-10: 4.3mm
Platinum 100ZL: 3.8mm
Platinum A1: 4.1mm
Platinum BN: 4.0mm
Platinum CA: 3.1mm
Platinum AA: 4.2mm
Platinum LA: 3.8mm
Platinum CN: 4.5mm
Platinum G: 5.6mm
Platinum Z: 6.8mm
rOtring 600: 4.2mm
rOtring 800: 3.4mm
Sheaffer Type G: 5.0mm
Tombow Monograph: 5.4mm
Tombow Mono Air Touch: 6.7mm
Tombow Mono Graph Zero: 2.3mm
Uni Size S: 4.5mm
Uni Size C: 3.3mm
Zebra DelGuard Z: 4.7mm
The size indicated here is the eraser diameter, not including the metal sheath.
TIP: One nice thing I discovered is that you can take a spare metal sheath and slide it around an eraser that already has a sheath to enlarge the diameter. This way you can avoid having to buy another eraser refill of a different diameter, and potentially save you a lot of money. Another thing you can do, is if you happen to have an eraser that's just a little too wide, remove the sheath and then wrap it with a small amount of aluminum tape. This will work as a "pseudo" replacement sheath, as with the pliability of the tape it's easy to conform it to fit.

Great information and thanks for sharing. Personally I never use my eraser on the mechanical pencil but a separate eraser. As an accountant I find this much easier and cleaner.

I find the pentel twist erase or the side fx series are great pencils with a jumbo erasers. I use it for field notes,

Often you can make your own.

I have a leather punch with various sizes. Compare your eraser with the proper size, buy one big flat eraser, and start punching small erasers out of that.

Glad to help out. I don't use the pencil mounted erasers much either, but they're useful in a pinch. I do prefer to rely upon separate large erasers or the dedicated "eraser pen." Dick, that's a pretty neat idea of using a tool punch to create your own, presuming of course you get a punch in the right diameter. :)

  • 2 weeks later...

It is good when resurecting an old mechanical pencil, and you want a functional eraser, not that hard hunk of rubber.
