With three of us, it looks as if we are starting an intercontinental movement. I must confess I've never heard of Very Old Barton. I'm not a huge fan of the New World whiskeys except for a couple of truly delightful ones my students have bought me - Woodford Reserve, and a Kentucky one called Copper Fox. I'm currently indulging (for nationalistic reasons) in Penderyn, the first and only Welsh whisky to come close to the better Scottish ones. Arcadian - what is your taste? I was in Lund in Sweden a while back and have brought with me a bottle of Hven (or is it Ven?) whisky, from Tycho Brahe's island in the Øresund. It will stay unopened till Christmas - what is yur advice?

 

Oh - and can anyone point me towards Copper Noir (which has become a huge favourite) in cartridges, or is it bottle only?

Well, if Monteverde Charoite, Fireopal and Olivine are available in cartridges, then it certainly suggests that Monteverde also packages most (if not all) of the colours in its Gemstone Collection of inks for retail in cartridges as well.

The noir line is not part of the gemstone series. I haven't seen them in cartridges.

I have the ten-bottle collections of both the Gemstone Collection and the Noir Collection, and I got them confused.

They also only sell the noir in stupid tiny bottles. which is what has precluded me from buying them. I actually REALLY like a bunch of the noir colors, and monteverde is a reliably high quality ink, but I hate bottles smaller than 40mL.

@Honeybadgers, that's ultimately your choice whether to constrain your options on that basis. I have a bunch of clean, empty Pilot Iroshizuku 50ml ink bottles here (compliments of Engeika, years ago), and if 30ml bottles bothered me in practical use, I could just pour the contents into a larger bottle.

 

As a lifelong consumer – something with which I permanently identify, and almost first and foremost at every turn – I recognise that what I prefer does not dictate the terms of offer of something in the market. It's up to me to make the compromise first, if I have needs and wants that I feel compelled to satisfy, by making do with what I've been offered and/or told I can order.

I totally understand my gripe is odd. But I do use colors I like pretty heavily and easily burned through a 90mL bottle of fireopal in a year. Having to buy three little bottles for the same capacity is just annoying, and I only move inks from their bottles if the bottle design is ugly and unusable since I display my inks on shelves in their boxes. (I'm looking at you, sailor and J. Herbin 1670)

 

I do appreciate the lower price and letting people get a chance to try an ink without buying a lot, and I am willing to overlook it in certain cases if the bottle is just lovely or the ink is outstanding in some way (nemosine inks only come in 35mL bottles but the bottle shape and feel is extremely high end, so I look past it) but personally, for my collection, I just don't like tiny bottles of ink.

I admit I preferred the old bottle design.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Amberlea, did Monteverde use a bottle design that is different from what it currently has on the market, in either the 90ml size or the 30ml size?

Thanks to all for responding to my query about cartridges. I wasn't aware that the gemstone inks were available in cartridges, and the fire opal looks like a reasonable standby that's fairly close to copper noir.

Monteverde Noir comes in two bottle sizes 30 and 90ml.

Add lightness and simplicate.

The Noir inks are available only in 30ml bottles. I was told this directly by the Yafa rep at the SF Pen Show.

@ErrantSmudge, while that may be the case, it's just exceeding weird that Monteverde is nominally a USA company, but would offer fewer options to its home market when it obviously 'manufactures' and packages the Noir Collection ink in 90ml retail bottles as well.

Probably a US vs. Europe thing then. Retailers in the US only stock 30, and I have no reason to disbelieve what the Yafa rep told me.

 

Monteverde inks are made in Austria.

90ml bottles can be purchased in the US from Pen Chalet.

If you go to the YAFA home page, select MONTEVERDE products, you are directed to MONTEVERDE USA, where ink collections appear & allows you to select between the different collections, under the NOIR collection it shows the inks are available in 30 & 90 ml bottles, along with the 10 bottle gift set.

 

I am always amused when I call MONTBLANC USA to inquire about an ink I have read about on FPN & my "Concierge" disavows knowledge of ANY such ink; the last time I even explained I had also seen a bottle of the ink in question (Emerald) listed on EBAY from a US Seller & Concierge still asked me "if I was SURE it was an authorised MB product & not merely a fake?" I presume his attempt to convince me it "couldn't be a REAL, AUTHENTIC, bottle of MB ink" or he would have known about it!

 

I don't think all Representatives always have accurate information & often times speak with authority about inquiries, rather than wanting to appear less informed than expected. I also know the tendency to never want to say, "I don't know the answer & will have to check on that" is very strong with some individuals.

I stand corrected then, which is good because the Noir inks are wonderful and it is good to have the larger sizes available. Either the rep was misinformed, or perhaps he was only referring to the stock onhand at the show.
