Does Your Pilot Ch 92 Piston Knob Look Like This?

Hey everyone! I just bought a new Pilot Custom Heritage 92 demonstrator pen (from an eBay Japanese seller) and it arrived today. I went with the FM nib and really like it! Currently it's inked with Bungubox Sweet Love Pink However, I noticed what appears to be some cracks spreading from the center of the piston knob and wanted to ask if anyone else's looks like this - maybe it's part of the design? I did a Google image search but wasn't able to find a good shot of a CH 92 piston knob to definitively say whether this is normal or not. The pen is fine and operates perfectly, so it's not a big deal, but I do slightly worry that if it is a crack it may get worse over time. It's hard to capture the problem in pictures so apologies for the not-so-great photos. Thanks so much for your input!

I've got two CH 92s, one clear, one "smoke". Nothing like that on either piston knob, just the dot in the very center.

Those are stress cracks.

Just checked my blue CH92 and no such cracks, have had the pen a few years now and not one ounce of trouble with it.

I'll be interested in finding out your experience in getting this fixed. For example, if you have to ship the defective pen back to them, will they reimburse you for postage?

 

I've bought a number of my Pilot pens (and one Platinum 3776 Century) on eBay from Japan because of the lower prices compared to U.S. dealers. No problems, luckily. But it did occur to me that if there had been a problem, then it could be a hassle getting it taken care of.

 

I worry a bit less about Japanese dealers on Amazon. Actually did have a couple of issues with purchases there, but they were "fulfilled by" Amazon, and they made it right. On the other hand, not sure how that works with Amazon dealers who ship directly from overseas.

After exchanging it, the replacement I just received ended up having the same issue. One of my older PCH 92s (purchased ~4 years ago) didn't have this problem...

 

I wonder if something has changed with the manufacturing process. At this point, I'm not sure if I want to try getting another replacement.

I have the same experience. I bought a CH92 smoke black some time ago and was perfect and without defects but the new one I purchased recently from the same Japanese eshop (transparent model) came with the feed and nib severely misaligned (a somehow easy fix) after noticing this and inspecting the pen I noticed the knob crack, the knob was surprisingly overtightened so I believe there is the cause of the internal cracks.

 

Fortunately, the dealer took full responsibility for the defect, offering a refund of the pen.
