Mb James Dean

So as promised some photos I took this morning at my local reseller shop of the special edition of the James Dean fountain pen. He already sold the limited edition so I wasn't able to see it and took photo of it for comparison but I will go back when he will receive new pens of the limited edition in the coming days:

So to be honest this special edition is not bad and red is one of my favorite color so it could be a pen I buy in the coming weeks as Christmas gift but for sure it won't be the limited edition. For the moment I bought the ink flacon and the RB refill of James Dean. Need to test them now.

Thanks for the pictures Cyrille, I'm guessing there's a tactile sensation when holding the barrel with that design?, The clip, I am just bothered by the clip. I guess I really do have to see the pen in person before deciding to purchase it.

For the tactile sensation I don't know exactly; didn't tried more than this but I think it is more or less something close than the LE of JFK. The design is made in the resin and the tactile sensation is really smooth. For the clip it is in metal and represent a rifle.

Beatles or James Dean ??? :gaah:

Didn't like either one at the beginning; now both are pretty interesting to me.

Will take a look at both at the local boutique tomorrow.

Cheers

Not my taste. The only one I liked from Great Characters was Da Vinci. In fact, even the Writers Edition is becoming disappointing in my opinion. Well, that's good to save money! LOL.

Handled both (Beatles & Dean) in the local boutique.

Both are nice! The Beatles made my eyes a little dizzy ... But I was really amazed by the Dean. Looks so great in real life and surprised to find the red resin having a pearlescent effect! Don't know if this has been mentioned before; maybe it was but I missed it ;-)

So it will be the Dean first (I'm sure the Beatles will follow later).

Will get one with an EF nib for Christmas.

Cheers

Admmarcos,

Ahhh the Da Vinci, I don't know if I'll ever get one someday with a nib choice that I would want, unless of course I would go bespoke, which would be exorbitantly expensive.

Michael R,

Thanks for sharing that bit of info about the pearlescent effect, must be hard to capture on pictures. Please do share your experience once you "bite the bullet" so to speak. Incidentally, Joost Appelbooms review of the pen was quite informative (Barrel, bullets and all).

Always the question that interests me, is it the pen that gets people or the person that it is dedicated to ? Would you own an ugly writing instrument if the person it was representing was a life long hero of yours ? Or, spinning it the other way, if a stunning pen was released for someone you could not abide or had little interest in would that influence your buying decision ?

If MB issued a PoA dedicated to Gustav Leonhardt, I'd buy it.

Rationalizing pen and ink purchases since 1967.

Very excited about this pen. I love the cap: all the metal and the small star are nice changes for MB.

I am torn between james dean and beatles FP. My ruthenium coating on beatles has been chipping and MB has offered to replace for either a new beatles or james dean. Thoughts? Would appreciate some opinions.

Thanks,

Steve

Hi Steve,

I would opt for James Dean. Aesthetically, it is more palatable to me.

Would you be able to elaborate on the chipping ? Where is it chipping from ? Without any inciting factors ? Pictures?

Thanks

N

The chipping happened twice on the nib area only. I have attached picture for reference. No inciting factors, just regular MB nib cleaner post ink-filling.

When I approached MB boutique, they said I was the only one that exhibited this. I find it quite weird as I have done nothing special to perpetuate this.

Thank you for your opinion, while Dean is more sophisticated, I feel that MB should not have written his dates on the top of the cap as this resulted in a smaller snow emblem which is quite a downfall.
